Cady Heron has never been to school before, having lived in Africa all her life, so when her parents move back to America and send her to a regular high school, she's terrified. She is quickly befriended by Janice Ian, a rumoured lesbian who wears far too much eyeliner, and Damien, Janice's very gay best friend, but three girls nicknamed 'The Plastics' decide they want Cady in their group.
'The Plastics' are the coolest girls in school - they're bitchy, gorgeous, and worshipped and despised in equal measure. They consist of Gretchen Wieners, Karen Smith and the leader of the group, Regina George - an vicious and manipulative but innocent-looking blonde who ALWAYS gets her own way, no matter how much she has to lie, scheme and flirt to get it!
Janice hates Regina and Cady quickly grows to as well, especially when Regina gets back together with her ex-boyfriend Aaron, despite promising to fix Cady up with him. Together they plot to infiltrate The Plastics, break down Regina George's reputation and reduce her superstar status to nothing. To do this, Cady has to convince The Plastics she is one of them, but does she start enjoying her role as a Plastic bitch a little too much?
Mean Girls is quite hard to describe. If you just watch it with your
brain switched off, you'll think of it as a your usual teen comedy, but there is somewhat of a dark feel to it, and it pokes fun at the class system in high schools. My sister looking over my shoulder has just told me I'm looking for the word 'satirical' - I have no idea what that means, but if you understand it, then Mean Girls is satirical, apparently!
Most films of this type are either too sickly or too dark and unpleasant, but Mean Girls is funny enough to pull it off! There are some great one liners and scenes which had me snorting, I was laughing that much!
All the cast do a pretty good job, particularly Lindsay Lohan. She's perfect as the naive but sweet Cady. She is also the narrator and is extremely likeable and friendly, despite her sometimes extremely bitchy behaviour! My only problem is that Lindsay's boobs sometimes do steal the attention... I mean, how do they bounce around like that by themselves?!
Also worth a mention is Rachel McAdams (The Hot Chick, The Notebook) as Regina. She is SUCH a witch but very hypnotising with it - she's such a cute Barbie doll, you want to grab her and put her in your pocket! She plays the gossipy bitch perfectly without being farcical or unrealistic.
Most teen films are so unbelievable and the 'teenagers' are played by people well in their thirties, but Lindsay Lohan herself is only 18, and the others all LOOK around the right age, although Rachel McAdams is 28, although I don't think she looks much older than me and I'm 15! Tina Fey the writer is spot on about cliques too - it is exactly the same in my school although maybe less glamorous!
Mean Girls is a real girly film - I can't really see guys liking it, unless they're just focusing on Lindsay Lohan's boobs which have a life of their own! Even I was kind of entranced and couldn't help staring at times! The ending of the film is kind of unrealistic but it's sweet and leaves you feeling happy and fuzzy inside; it's definitely one to watch with your friends! It's also very shiny - all the characters have perfect hair, perfect make-up and are well-dressed! It made me feel a bit ashamed to be watching it in my pyjamas, stuffing my face with chocolate brownies!
The only bad point of Mean Girls is very stereotypical - Damien is your typical gay guy who hangs around with girls and uses pore minimiser, Janice is your usual artistic loner, etc etc. That said, the film has it's fair share of funny, fresh characters - Regina's mum who likes to think she's still 18, and whose nipples are around her neck, and Kevin Gnapoor, 'bad ass MC' and Maths geek!
The only other thing I can think of is that the 'mean girls' weren't really that nasty! Regina was a bitch yes, but the others were nice enough and weren't really mean enough to be believable as Regina's friends - Gretchen is ditzy but sweet and Karen is plain thick but lovely with it!
I think Mean Girls is great. Up there with Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, I'd say! Fun, glamorous and witty - what more can you really ask for?! It's rated 12 and runs for about 90 minutes, if you were wondering!
...Just a few quotes, so you understand the humour!
SEX EDUCATION TEACHER - 'Don't have sex because you will get pregnant... and die. Don't have sex in the missionary position, don't have sex standing up.. kids, don't do it. Promise? Okay, everybody take some rubbers.'
'If you do touch each other, you will get chlamydia.. and die.' ----- REGINA-WORSHIPPER - 'One time, she punched me in the face... it was awesome.' ----- 'MR DUVALL: Now, what you young ladies in this grade need is an attitude makeover, and you're going to get it right now. I don't care how long it takes. I will keep you here all night. SECRETARY: Um, we can't keep them past four. MR DUVALL: I will keep you here until four.' ------ MR DUVALL - (shouting) I OUGHT TO CANCEL YOUR SPRING FLING... but I'm not gonna do that because we've already paid the DJ.
