Mean Girls is a teen film, yes and when you probably saw the adverts for it you would have thought not another American teen movie but this is a film with a difference from the rest. You may remember Lindsay Lohan from the recent remake of Freaky Friday and from The Parent Trap when she was a lot younger but now she has grown up and is becoming one of the more famous teens in Hollywood. I think she made a good decision to do this film because her follow up from Freaky Friday which was 'Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen' was not as good and was childish not really showing anyone that she can truly act and see her in a more mature light.
The difference with Mean Girls to other teen movies is that it was given a lot of positive reviews which also encouraged me to go see this. I went to see it with my friends.
The film begins by us being seeing Lindsay's character Cady her parents getting her ready for school. This is very unusual for Cady as she has been homeschooled and never attended a real school in her life before. She lived in Africa up until now with animals but of course for job reasons her parents made the move and now it is Cady's first day at school.
In first class she finds things weird but she is introduced to Janis and Damian who are not exactly the most popular kids in school but she is desperate to make friends and accepts their company. She skips first class with the two of them which is health class not really missing much we are switched to a clip of a teacher lecturing the kids to not have sex and then taken back to three of them, that was the health class she missed.
They are sitting in the fields and then the P.E class comes out and then Janis explains to her that those girls in the class are 'The Plastics' consisting of Regina, Gretchen and Karen who are not really that intelligent, mean but they think appearance is important.
One thing I feel is true about the film is the different cliques in any school this is true there are girls like the plastics and then unpopular girls, boys in a sports team, intelligent groups and so on. She is told to sit with The Plastics at lunch by the group leader Regina and then she tells her all the rules of being in their group such as what to wear on a certain day and other rules which are ridiculous.
Janis & Damian talk to her later and say that she must stay in the group so they can find out about them and a way to get them back which goes a bit far really and causes the problem. Cady starts to get a bit too far into this. This is a very funny film with original jokes it is not a case of unpopular girl tries to get the popular guy for a change there is depth to the story. The characters are so real and you feel sorry for them at times relating to them.
Lindsay Lohan does an excellent job in this film of being natural and mature in this role making us really believe her. Of all the teen actresses around at the moment she is one I like and I feel she has a career which won't end within two years because she chooses her parts carefully. Rachel McAdams is someone who really did well, I read that she was 27 years old so to really make us believe she was young and act so comfortably in the high school environment was talented in itself.
This film would be enjoyable for all age groups because as I previously said there are jokes for everyone and the story is not just for teens because it is not all a fairytale ending. If you have not heard of Lindsay before go see this film because there are so many actresses out there and this shows off many new ones who are talented.
I thought the fashion in the film was great and also the music was good every song really worked in the scene it was used and made this film work well also. The film lasts for 97 minutes and is a 12A. This film will be out on DVD on October 18th when you can also buy a joined set with Clueless and this film.
