I drink perhaps too much. I am in the process of giving up cigarettes thus my general view of the world is marred by eternal desire for nicotine. It does not make me an amiable person.

My friend and I arrived at the cinema, rushing 10 minutes late. I needed the toilet but ‘bugger it’ I said, ‘I’m a woman, we’re good with control’ and so we ran inside screen 7, and the friend whispered ‘Sit anywhere, sit anywhere’ and thus we did. The movie looked as though it were coming to an end, and we were quite perplexed, peered again and again at our tickets, yes the right screen and thought, right well – fine, they will have the flashback sooner or later, but no we watched the end of the movie and then peering even closer at our tickets, we saw that we were an hour early, yes we were at the 7:50 show instead of the 8:50. So I managed to watch the end of Mean Girls twice, quite a feat don’t you think?
I’m nowhere near being a teenager, those years sit distantly behind me but when friend e-mailed and asked if I wanted to go with her, I said yes. I admit, I enjoy the odd bit of fluff. Friends response was, ‘Don’t worry, it’s a cult’ – so I didn’t worry, and I went to watch.
I wouldn’t say it’s a cult, its not as dark as Heathers, but it is enjoyable, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously or try and give a subtle (but not) lecture on sex, drugs and so on. Phew.
The story goes as such: - Cady (the ubiquitous Lindsey Lohan) has never been to a ‘proper’ school before having spent most of her life in Africa with her zoologist parents, she was thus home schooled. However, the time comes whence she is thrown in with the lions, or gorillas -animals in any event. Her first day, naturally, is not all roses and she ends up munching on her food in a toilet. However, on the second day she meets arty Janis and camp Damian, acerbic characters who decide to accept her into their small intimate group (just the two of them) and give her the low down of the various groups within the school. You have the sexually active band click, the attractive Asians, the geeky Asians, the Jocks, the wannabes and then of course you have The Plastics, the queen being Regina (ha!), the bitchy self obsessed leader of the group (Rachel McAdams – and you will see her in the Note Book), then there’s Lacy who so desires to be Regina and informs Cady of the rules (on Wednesday’s we wear pink, we have to approve of what clothes you wear, yak yak yak). Then there’s Karen a vacuous (understatement) blonde who merits in sleeping around and has boobs that can tell ‘the weather’. Regina accepts Cady into the group and it turns out that Janis is thrilled at the chance to finally bring the Plastics down, by using Cady as a spy, to garner as much information as possible to us against them. And so, the transformation of Cady begins as she is moulded into a Plastic.
It’s rather amusing watching the transformation of Cady from being a likeable hardworking student, to becoming a popular miniskirt, gum chewing, lip gloss wearing, ‘luv ya’ talking, Plastic. and becomes more and more immersed into her self, her looks and her wants. Basically, she becomes Regina. There’s also some requisite ‘eye candy’ (for the younger viewers I hasten to add), in the form of Aaron (Regina’s ex), the boy that Cady falls for in maths class where she dumbs herself down so that she will have reason to speak to him.
It is worth going to watch for some gentle no brainer escapism I even had a few moments of laughing out loud. The acting is sharp and believable, and what’s great is that nobody steals the show. Damian is not too gay, Cady not too likeable, and so on. Lindsey Lohan is likeable enough and believable as an actress, but what’s enjoyable about this movie is that it’s not Lindsey Lohan’s movie, it’s the solid acting from all that makes it work.
