especially liked by UK reviewers, but opened in the US to rave reviews. Carrying the relationship between two teenagers through their student days and into adulthood, it shows the more obviously charismatic Marina (Anna Friel) as parasitic on her more intelligent friend Holly (Michelle Williams) and then utterly devastated when Holly tries to break away (a brief epilogue shows them still involved years later). Best known for her role inDawson's Creek, Michelle Williams (whose English accent is impeccable) gives a finely nuanced performance; Anne Friel runs the gamut from drug-induced stupor to malice to hysteria with a staginess that is only partly the character's. There are solid performances from Trudy Stiler as the neurotic ex-croupier mother who is part of Marina's problem and Kyle McLachlan as the oddly passive lecturer whom both seduce. The film is good on the passage of time--it has a fine eye for the fashion disasters of 1970s to 90s Britain--yet it's somehow disingenuous in its avoidance of emotional subtext. It's overly partial, too: Holly is obviously a stand-in for the writer-director.On the DVD:Me Without Youris presented in a widescreen visual ratio of 2.35:1 with Dolby 5.1 digital sound that gives full weight and intensity to a soundtrack which revisits a well-chosen selection of obvious and obscure tracks from the period. It has no extra features. --Roz Kaveney

Step back in time to 1973. Marina (Anna Friel )and Holly (Michelle Williams) are young girls and they make a pact to stay friends ‘forever’. Fast forward to 1978, the girls are bored teenagers, lazing about bored and smoking. Marina’s parents are glamourous, her mum (played by Trudie Styler) lets them use her make up, and her dad (Nicky Henson) flits in and out of their lives when he pleases. Marina has an older brother, Nat (Oliver Milburn). Holly has a crush on him.
Holly is mousey and studious. Marina is her complete opposite. She’s the leader, the outrageous one that takes care of things. She leads her friend astray, taking her to parties where they sneak out and change into rather dubious clothing (what looked like rubber bin bags - I’m sure I never wore anything like that, but I could be wrong!) and to make themselves look grown up, they give each other love bites. No comment.
This is when the film took a bit of a turn for me. They get to the party and there’s a few guys there who are into drugs and Marina is soon being injected. I have to say I didn’t really like this, (OK I admit it, I'm a prude!) and obviously if you do watch this film and you have kids around, this isn’t one for them. At the same party, Holly finds herself in bed with Nat. Marina comes round from her drug induced haze and sees them together, and inevitably they argue.
Fast forward again to 1982 – Nat’s in love with Isobel and moves abroad for a while. Marina sports rather nasty blonde hair with black roots and wears long jumpers and invisible skirts. Both girls are at uni and both fancy their tutor, Daniel (Kyle Maclachlan). He ends up bedding both of them with both girls oblivious to what he’s doing. Then Nat comes back. And everything changes.
* Characters *
Marina is the rebel, the one who craves affection because she doesn’t get it from her own family. Anna Friel plays her part well as the flirty friend who Holly looks up to. The viewer is left to wonder if Marina is actually jealous of Holly as she seems to delight in trying to ruin any happiness for her best friend.
Holly is the quiet one, the plain one who wants to be like her best friend but can never quite match up. Michelle Williams shines as Holly. For those who don’t know her, she plays Jen in Dawson’s Creek, although you’ll be hard pushed to recognise her as dowdy Holly! I also think she may have gone to the Bridget Jones Academy of Accents, in that her English accent does slip up from time to time! However, she does a commendable job.
* My thoughts *
The beginning of the film was promising. I was a teenager in the 80s and this reminded me a tiny bit of me and my best friend. But that was as far as it went for me. Once the drugs started and the arguments, I started to lose a bit of interest. The friendship becomes claustrophobic and events in Marina’s life spiral out of control and Holly is left to pick up the pieces. Holly becomes the stronger character, realising that Marina has leaned on her far too much in the past and now she wants to break away from her.
The director’s production notes at the end tell us that this film was loosely based on a friendship that she’d had herself as a young girl. It carried on into her teenage years and eventually became an obsessive bond.
The fashions are a bit of a flashback for me. Yes we really wore horrible clothes like that! And now they’re back in the shops, err no ... we won’t be going there again! The nasty dyed hair, shapeless baggy jumpers, ripped tights and fingerless gloves brought the memories flooding back!
The two main characters are very strong and their performances alone keep the film going. Other mentions go to Trudie Styler (Mrs Sting) and Kyle Maclachlan who is the slippery and untrustworthy teacher.
So, did I like the film? Well it was OK. This was a gritty look at life in the 80s. It wasn’t all sugared up to be a ‘best buddy’ movie. This was very much a ‘Brit’ film rather than a shmulzy Hollywood movie. This was hard hitting, with drug scenes (and partial nudity), betrayal and family issues all getting in the way. But this is also about friendship and love. So it’s a chick flick with a difference.
The film ends in 2001 – are Holly and Marina still friends? Well you’ll have to watch the film to find out.

I’m going to award this 3 stars. I got this dvd free with a magazine and I’m glad I didn’t fork out money for it. However it is selling at www.play.com for £5.99 at the moment, which isn’t exactly expensive if you do want a copy. Some parts were dragged out and ending up being boring. Other parts were amusing and the Holly/Nat on/off relationship keeps the viewer interested.
However, if you were around in the 80s or just want to step back in time, then grab yourself some popcorn and settle down for a night in front of the box!
Advantages: It finishes Disadvantages: in a nutshell; it's cr*p

I’m pregnant, I’m gay, I’m having an affair, I’m an alien. And then they’d do it all over again…
Yawn…
Despite the general awfulness and the poor material they are given to work ... ...two female friends that accompanied me did quite enjoy it, giving it 3 stars each so perhaps it’s, and I hate using this expression, an out and out chick-flick.
Movie has a “15” certificate. Strong language, including the “c” word. Some partial nudity. Scenes of a sexual nature. Scenes of drug taking.
Oh by the way, don’t go trying to verify the trivia “facts” at the start of the op, I made them up. ...

So, Marina (Friel) and Holly (Williams) are bestest of best friends, living next door to each other in some dreadful English town, the name of which escapes me. Advantages: interesting story Disadvantages: a bit long
I think it's safe to say that 'Catch me if you can' is not the typical sort of movie I watch. If it's not a girly chick flick, comedy or kids film, I'm usually not interested, but after being assured that this film contained no violence or gore, I agreed on watching the DVD!
~The Plot~
It's the mid sixties and Frank Abagnale Jnr is barely sixteen years old when his life is turned upside down. He and his parents have recently been forced to move from their luxury house to a cramped apartment after his father failed to pay his taxes, and as if that wasn't bad enough, he then he walks in on his mother in bed with another man. Frank is devastated, but shortly afterwards, he returns home, and an even bigger bombshell is dropped on him - his parents are getting divorced. A lawyer talks to Frank, and tells him he must choose which of his ...
Advantages: Hilarious after several views. Reasonably good value for money. Disadvantages: Bit too short.
Words cannot describe how simple yet ingeniously funny this programme was (and still is). The basic premise is Alan Partridge (played by Steve Coogan), interviews a number of equally fictional guests, but in a cringeworthily poor and clumsy way. Following on from the equally successful series The Day Today, this series delves further into the character of Partridge. This 2-disc DVD contains all 6 episodes from the one series of Knowing Me, Knowing You, along with the Christmas special (Knowing Me, Knowing Yule), and heaps of extras and special features (including biographies of the stars of the show and audio commentaries by members of the cast). I think it is unique in that it is not your standard comedy series. Most shows are sitcom based, whereas this (when it originally hit our screens way back in 1994) is completely different. It is ...

DVD Description
ME WITHOUT YOU, directed by Sandra Goldbacher (THE GOVERNESS), follows two girls who promise to be best friends forever. Marina (Anna Friel) is troubled, extroverted, and the product of a broken home, while Holly (Michelle Williams) is a quiet girl who escapes from her overprotective family into a world of books, music, and imagination. As the girls grow up together, their paths diverge but they cling to each other as the one constant in each other's life. Holly also secretly has a strong attraction to Marina's older brother, Nat (Oliver Milburn). Eventually Holly comes to feel trapped by Marina's possessive, controlling friendship, and she realizes that being with Nat is the only way to truly be herself. Filmed with close attention to period detail, Goldbacher anchors each phase of Holly and Marina's friendship with clothes, production design, and especially music, meant to evoke life in Britain from the 1970s and '80s. From Punk and New Wave to the more materialistic Thatcherite era, Friel and Williams portray two girls desperately trying to keep up with the pace of their lives and the world around them. Ultimately, they have to discover how to be both the girls they were together and the women they have become individually.
