seen through the eyes of one supremely distinct figure, Rodney Bingenheimer. Directed by acclaimed documentarian George Hickenlooper (HEARTS OF DARKNESS), the film examines the life of Los Angeles' 'Mayor of Sunset Strip'. Coming of age in LA in the 1960s, just as rock-and-roll was bursting onto the scene, Bingenheimer was obsessed with all things musical. Though not a successful musician himself, he nonetheless befriended rock's elite. In the 1970s, he opened up his own club, Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, which played host to luminaries such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Marc Bolan. It was in 1976, however, when Rodney found his true calling. On his weekly radio show on KROQ, Bingenheimer introduced several of popular music's most celebrated voices to America--Blondie, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, and Coldplay. Hickenlooper incorporates interviews with Bingenheimer and an endless parade of musicians, as well as a nearly unbelievable scrapbook of photos, to show just how closely connected Rodney was to the scene. A fascinating portrait of rock-and-roll's unsung hero, THE MAYOR OF SUNSET STRIP also makes poignant commentary on the bizarre nature of celebrity and the infatuation it breeds. This movie screened in October 2003 as part of the 41st New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.n

...1960, small town France. Vianne Rocher and her pre-teen daughter move into town and open a chocolate shop just as lent is beginning. The town's small-minded mayor can't accept this and does his best to shut her down, but her warm personality and incredible chocolates manage to win over many townsfolk. Things get shaken up even more when a group of river drifters, led by Roux, stop into town (to the even greater distress of the mayor) and Vianne takes up with him. Meanwhile, she's been helping Josephine out of her abusive marriage and her equally freethinking landlord, Amande Voisin, get together with her grandson, Luc, whose mother doesn't approve of Amande's ways....

Advantages: Comic and watchable Disadvantages: Utterly lightweight
..."Dick Tracy" is fundamentally undemanding stuff. An attempt to convert comic strip not into film but into comic strip film, it was never likely to be intellectually challenging fare. This is not to criticise the film: its stars perform their roles excellently, there are many richly comic moments and the script is adequate. For all that, the film remains unmemorable for me in a way in which, for example, "Batman" did not. Perhaps if the producers had taken their original source more seriously they might have succeeded in a more important creation, rather than this enjoyable but bland film....
