Advantages: Great strong story, memorable characters, wonderful performances and a powerful film. Disadvantages: Plot at times a bit complex and I cannot remember the soundtrack.
Belonging to a film club I get to see a lot of films. In fact, watching films is one of my favourite pastimes. Recently I watched ?The Last King of Scotland?. It is a 2006 British drama film based on Giles Foden's novel.
It tells the fictional tale of Dr Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy). He is a young Scottish doctor who visits Uganda and meets with dictator Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). On meeting Idi Amin he soon becomes his personal physician and this is where the story begins. The film is based around actual events of Amin's dictatorship.
The film begins in Scotland 1970 when Nicholas Garrigan graduates from medical school. The young man has no idea of the events that are about to take place in his life. He has no idea how his work will change history or where he will end up. Maybe if he did know then he wouldn't choose ...
Advantages: Great acting, story to be told Disadvantages: Gruesome
.
The film was actually adapted from a book by Giles Foden of the same name. The title comes from the fact that Amin has a great love for all things Scottish and actually proclaims himself, "The Last King of Scotland."
I think the scenery and countryside contributed to this story as well. It was great to see a different culture and country in view and all the things that took palce there. I think it also help the reader to better understand just what the population of Uganda went through during these terrible times.
The DVD is rated 15 as it contains strong violence, gruesome images, sex and language. I did find this film quite gruesome but I think it needed to be to tell the story properly but definitely not one I recommend for kids. The film runs for approximately 117 minutes and special features include 7 deleted scenes, exclusive documentary ...
Advantages: A spoon full of sugar... Disadvantages: ...might rot your teeth.
It was in the first of a series of books that the character of Mary Poppins arrived, carried by the east wind, at Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. This book was published in 1934 but after that the books "Mary Poppins Comes Back", "Mary Poppins Opens the Door" and Mary Poppins In The Park" were also printed. The author of the books P.L. Travers was unconvinced that a film would do the books and the characters justice but eventually she relented and in 1964, 'Mary Poppins' the film was released. It took Disney just over two years to complete and throughout there was conflict between Disney and Travers. Despite this, the film still captured a magical, timeless story.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the film, Disney released a digitally re-mastered DVD in 2004. This is the one I have and it has updated my home-recorded video version that ...
