Big Boss - Bruce's Lee's spotlight

Advantages: Bruce Lee, gory but funny fight scenes, some interesting extras, remastered picture and sound
Disadvantages: You can tell that Lee didn't direct this.

...role after his success in the American market with support roles in Green Hornet, Ironside and Long Street. Although this is my least favourite Lee film, it is still a worthwhile investment. In this film, Lee plays the character Cheng, a country bumpkin type who leaves China to earn a living in Thailand. He is looked after by his uncle and accepted in to their family. A central aspect of this film is that Lee is forbidden from fighting as a result ...
...until about 30 minutes into the film. Of course being an early 1970's film, this one is full of the usual cliches; over acting, shaky sets, bad soundtracks and dodgy editing cuts BUT it does allow Lee to demonstrate that he did intend to be an actor rather than just a kick and punch jockey. Lee's family are workers at an ice factory which is actually a front for a drug smuggling business. Workers are treated badly by the gangsters running the factory ...

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Advantages: Great Fight Scenes
Disadvantages: None, Bruce Lee Rocks

Bruce Lee, The Man is a legend when it comes to Martial Arts films. This was the first film Bruce was to do with Golden Harvest Films and although the later films are much better it is still a well worth watching film. Now before I start of course the original is not going to be in English although the DVD will give you the option of putting on the Dubs. I think to really appreciate the film then you need to watch it as the Director intended. And ...
...all about the fighting and nobody does it better than Bruce Lee. So the film itself has a vague plot about drugs and cheap labour and even though it does drag sometimes, the action more than makes up for it. I remember the first time I saw this film as a boy, I was instantly hooked on martial arts and wanted to be just like Bruce. It's worth pointing out that there is a love story (as with all Bruce Lee films) in the background but enough of that ...

What to expect?

Advantages: Stunts look as real as they come!
Disadvantages: in Thai

I had recently watched 'Ong Bak' and the back of this dvd said; 'does for stunts what 'ong bak' did for martial arts'. Now, if you have seen ong bak, that is a hard statement to live up to. However, I definitely think the film delivered. The stunts are mostly done without wires thus, what you see is what you get. It is definitely worth seeing for the wow factor. The stunts themselves are not limited to one type like many other films you get. It had ...
...gymnastic moves in there which allowed for a very big range of stunts you never thought possible and I'm sure there must have been a couple of broken ribs whilst trying to do them all. However, saying this, the storyline isn't that strong and again with many thai films coming out, there is comedy where really you need it to be serious, but luckily this is only in a few of places. I'd say its a good film and I'd definitely watch this space for more ...

Big Boss: Martial arts AND a plot! (and Bruce Lee)

Advantages: More plot than expected
Disadvantages: Not much action to start with

...you want more detail about the cast, etc, I'd suggest www.imdb.com ) ** THE PLOT ** Bruce Lee goes to live with relatives after having sworn an oath not to fight again (but you know that's not going to last long!) and joins some of them in working for a factory producing ice. However, a few of the workers accidentally discover that the factory is not all it seems and is dealing in something far more profitable than ice. When some of the workers ...
...film, but having said that, the plot was stronger than I expected and actually worked quite well. The action is largely predictable but still engaging. It's not that spectacular for the most part, but there's some much better stuff towards the end (mainly from Lee of course). Bruce Lee hardly appears at all for the first half of the film (although this does contribute to his character a little) and the majority of the fighting is reserved for the ...

The Man the Myth

Advantages: Great un-cut action
Disadvantages: Ruined my view of "Game of death"

...other kids saying how brilliant Bruce Lee is and all the 80's spending my hard earned cash on exspensive strongly cut versions of his films on video. The four i got at that time were ofcourse "Big Boss, Fist of fury, Way of the dragon and Game of death" Enter the Dragon came later for me when it was shown uncut on TV very late one night after a live Liverpool european supercup game. That was the first time i saw it un cut as other times after that ...
...was still chuffed with my Bruce Lee collection and it got me very interested in the man himself, and the more i learned the more he intrigue me. His philosophies and methods were inspiring. Then came the film "Dragon" with Jason Scott Lee playing Bruce. The film gave an insight to the way Bruce came up to stardom and wanted so much to share his wisdom and skills with the western world. I still had a yearning however to see the full versions of his ...
