Introduction
Being a fan of crime/thriller/psychological dramas, Alfred Hitchcock films have always appealed to me and I now have quite a collection. This is not one of the most famous of Alfred Hitchcock's films, but I believe it has been under-estimated and should be better-known than it is. The film was first released in 1964.

The director
Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstowe, England and died in 1980. His film-making career began in 1919, and by 1926 had made his name in the industry with the silent film, The Lodger. He moved to Hollywood in 1940, and afterwards directed a string of films for which he is most remembered, including To Catch a Thief, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Psycho and The Birds. His final film was family plot in 1976.

The plot
Marnie (played by Tippi Hedren) is a serial burglar who moves from job to job under a series of aliases. Each time she leaves, a substantial sum of money leaves with her. Then she arrives at Rutland & Co, where young Mr Rutland (Sean Connery) recognises her from a previous job she had undertaken. He is concerned by Marnie's behaviour - particularly her fear of the colour red and storms - and battles to help her, to the extent of marrying her. This is a psychological drama with the roots to Marnie's problems discovered in her childhood.

The actors
Sean Connery is fabulous as Mr Rutland. Brooding and utterly gorgeous, he is also a fabulous actor. Tippi Hedren over-acts a little (and has a pretty dreadful hairdo), but nevertheless contributes to what is a marvellous drama.

Tecnical aspects
In the version that I have, there is an hour long documentary about the making of the film, which is surprisingly very interesting. The film is in colour and I suspect has been digitally enhanced, although there is no information on this on the packaging. The classification is 15. The film is approximately 2 hours long.

Conclusion
This is a film that covers the effects on mental health that abuse in childhood can lead to. This is done both sensitively and admirably. The beginning was quite slow, but nevertheless inspired me to keep watching. The film is highly watchable and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers.

A new version of the DVD will be released on Amazon on October 17 2005. Cost is £7.49.

Haven't seen this one, but anything with a young brooding Sean Connery is worth a watch. Vic
