Advantages: Outstanding visually with good development and excellent narration Disadvantages: mixed bag of special features
I had heard about how great this film had done in America and was intrigued as to how a nature film could draw them in.
The version I viewed was the UK single disk version, which lasts for 76mins
The first thing that strikes you is the striking visual introduction and the intelligent use of Morgan Freemans voice, which drops in at appropriate moments and then leaves to allow the gentle music to enhance the pictures.
The film covers the entire cycle from males progressing to the mating ground, the females arriving, the births and then the astounding feeding cycle. During the period where both sexes are present there is a feeling that at times the filmakers try too hard to humanise the emotions of the penguins, however thankfully this is brief.
On the topic of failure this is handled in a very matter of fact way. The penguin ...
Advantages: Good film with excellent special effects Disadvantages: none
good and evil, but with cutting edge special effects and action scenes galore this is a great film to watch.
The blu-ray version i watched was a 2 disc set with the second disc full of extras. There was a section on the history of transformers, and interviews with executive producers Steven Spielberg and Brian Goldner, writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, and director Michael Bay. There were also features on the animation used and the way they worked out where to do scenes. You also get a look at the military equipment seen and used in the film.
This additional information is something you do not want to skip over, because it gives you a much deeper understanding of how much planning and work went into the final production. If you are into cutting edge special effects and head banging action then beg, borrow, rent, or if that fails buy ...
Advantages: Wonderful scenery, very factual, cute penguins Disadvantages: some sad moments
March of the Penguins is a film which I had been undecided about watching for quite some time. After finally buying it me and my hubby sat down last night to watch it. I was aware before the film began that it was more of a documentary but this did not bother me as I do occasionally like documentaries if they are on good subjects.
The start of the film shows the amazing South Pole and the narration tells us that at one time people did live here as it was once a much warmer place before the land split and moved and subsequently became covered in ice. Morgan Freeman gives the narration to the documentary and he tells us of one tribe which has remained in the South Pole and how they are penguins. Firstly we meet the Emperor penguins, the males, which are by the sea feeding and all of they at the same time start out on a very long walk ...
Coming from a French director, Luc Jacquet, the miraculous MARCH OF THE PENGUINS would have to be a love story. And it is, in that it follows the mating rituals of the emperor penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer, after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding, the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking in single file, they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction, moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there, they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate a monogamous match that will last a year, through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time, the mother will birth an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter, which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally, with spring, the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns, while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. The film is remarkable in its story, which is narrated by Morgan Freeman, whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is its photography, which shows the penguins hunting underwater, sliding on the ice, and in the midst of kissing. At one point the camera even zooms inside the mouth of a penguin as it regurgitates for its young. A story of love and more strikingly, survival, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS is any eye-opening and educational experience.
