I'm a 21 year old 'lady' who lives alone -aww- and loves anything that smells of coconut. That was a fairly random comment but I thought people should know.

HISTORY For anyone who hasn't came across Jane Austen's work before, here is a little history lesson! The book that this is adapted from was published in 1814, 192 years ago! By that time Jane had already written her biggest and most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice. So when this book came out, people were a little disappointed. In fact, Fanny Price, who is the heroine, is one of the most hated literary characters of all time! Go ahead, put that name into a search engine and see all the hate pages appear before your eyes. So already a hard job for a director, who decided it was probably best not to stick to the novel. So instead the director takes part of the story, and parts of Jane Austen's real life and merges them together. So if you have read the book or another adaptation and then watched this and said 'hang on a mo! That's nuffin' Like the real story' then that's why!
ABOUT? Fanny Price is born to a rather poor family, her mother and father already have plenty of children so Fanny is shipped of to live with her aunt, uncle and two cousins. They have a pretty big estate (as her uncle is a slave owner) and Fanny's parents are assured it's the best possible situation for her. There she lives for years, gradually falling in love with one of her cousins. But of course nothing is easy, a neighbour called Henry has his eye on Fanny and in true Jane Austen style he's a bit of a bad boy. So there are cousins dating cousins and her cousin dating her suitor's sister… its all very sitcom! Like a 200 year old episode of Friends.
BAD BAD BAD Why oh why did they try to 'revamp' this? Add a sex scene here, a rape image there and there you go! Did they forget this was Jane Austen!? Terrible, terrible attempt at trying to update and old story.
CAST AND ACTING The acting wasn't bad, but it hardly sent shivers down my spine. It was all very mediocre. Casting wise, well the men all seemed fairly well suited, but Fanny wasn't really portrayed as 'meek' enough for me, the actress tried to inject too much personality which failed. Watch out for bad boy Henry though, even though your not supposed to like him he is the only character with an ounce of personality.

CONCLUSION You will either love this, or hate it. If you like the sex free (but hinted at) romance of your typical Austen novel, where everything is upper class and proper then you probably won't like this. Personally, as a Jane Austen fanatic I couldn't miss this, although I was disappointed. It's always nice to see a new spin on things but this adaptation just wasn't for me. Watch it, but don't be too disappointed when you lose interest half way through. I would recommend it purely because it is Jane Austen... somewhere in there and I would recommend Jane Austen's work to anyone!

I studied Mansfield Park at A Level and can totally understand why Fanny is so hated! So insipid and just way too nice! I remember watching this film and wasn't overly impressed - give me a traditional Jane Austen adaptation any day!
