‘Leaving the 20th Century’. Manic Street Preachers @ Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. South Wales. UK. Just for those who don't know, this was the concert that the Manics did on New Years Eve, 1999, which continued to New Years Day, 2000, early morning.
I was supposed to be there :-( But, my own band had already been booked Months in advance for that night, there was no way of getting out of it, so I simply couldn't go :-( Being a HUGE Manics fan I was gutted, this was a real Once in a lifetime experience I missed, it’s not as if I’ll have the chance again! So, to try and make up for this, my Fiancé got it me on DVD as soon as it Was released :-) Yippee!!
It was a fantastic concert!, everything was perfect, the fans were going bonkers, The band looked like they were having a blast, the stage looked great, the Only thing missing was Richey, but, lets not go there...
As I might have
mentioned, it was staged at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, Where Wales won the rugby world cup (I'm pretty sure!)
The concert we get on the DVD lasts 103 minutes long, obviously we don’t Get the whole concert, as it went on for hours and hours, but according to A very lucky friend of mine who was there, they did a good job in squeezing In most of it, not that I’d know :-( the sound could have been better, it's in Dolby, where most other bands record in Dolby 5.1, or better, but, that's just a small flaw! Don't expect nothing fancy from the menu, it’s just a plain purple Background, with the lists on it, I suppose that could have been better, but, we didn’t buy the DVD purely to watch the menu now did we?!! There is a photo gallery with pictures from the concert, don’t remember how many, not a lot though, (you get 1000 on the Metallica DVD, Cunning Stunts)a discography, a short interview with the band before the gig, and studio videos of ‘If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next’ and ’Ready For Drowning’. Separate from the concert, recorded at Chateau De La Rouge, Motte, Domfort, France. February 1998.
My only fault with the gig itself, is there is too many crowd shots, but, wouldn't it be good if you were there and saw yourself??!
I also wish it was longer :) There’s a great mix of songs, they must play Everyone’s favorite at least once! There's even subtitles, if you like to sing along (Who doesn't??!)
Here's the set list; Intro (The band getting ready, walking on) you stole the sun from my heart. Everything must go Faster Tsunami The masses against the classes The everlasting Kevin Carter La tristesse durera Rock and roll music Ready for drowning Of walking abortion No surface, all feeling Motown junk Motorcycle emptiness Can't take my eyes off you Small black flowers that grow in the sky Australia Elvis impersonator:Blackpool pier You love us Stay beautiful If you tolerate this your children will be next A design for life
That's it! Trust me, it's as good as it sounds! There are a few funny moments, Nicky's wearing this skirt and top, and really over the top eye shadow and he's dancing about like something gone silly!! James tries to show off playing "Sweet child of mine" and messes it up, couldn't help but laugh!!! Being a musician, (Although a few people could argue with that lol!) I spotted lots of mistakes, but I’d notice a needle in a haystack!
I cannot recommend that you buy this enough, you really won't regret it.
This DVD is always stored by the player in my house, instead of on the shelf with the 100's of other DVD's we've got, mainly because it's always on!! Good job DVD doesn't deteriorate ;-)

Thanks for reading! Now go buy the DVD lol! Oh, and for those of you with no DVD player, this is available on VHS. So there! You have no excuse ;-)
By the way…my sacrifice was not worth it in the end, as I left the band in January, 2000 :( So I should have just gone anyways!
