This was uniteds year know one was going to stop them from winning that illustrious treble. united had to put the 97/98 season behind them and with that they had the skipper roy keane back who had missed most of the 97/98 season and he brought us that cutting edge along with new signings dwight yorke, jaap stam, and jesper blomquist.
The season didnt start too brightly though, losing to arsenal twice and would have lost to leicester if it wasnt for the brilliance of david beckham. But united always start the season slow and as the season progressed united were destroying teams as nottingham forest found out when united hammerd them 8-1.
March arrived and the talk of the treble had emerged and united were picking up speed beating newcastle and everton in that month and pushing arsenal all the way. the month of march brought the 6th round of the fa cup in which united played chlsea twice owing to a replay in which united eventually won at stamford bridge thanks to a yorke double. The next round of the cup we would play arsenal. united also played inter milan in the quarter final of the champions league in the month of march and beat them 3-1 over two legs.
april arrived and united were still pusing arsenal all the way in the premiership getting a good 3-0 win against sheff wed. the fa cup semi final also came around bringing with it another replay after united and arsenal drew a stalemate in the first game, the replay was one of the best games ive ever seen beckham scored a cracking goal in the first half from about 25 yards out. The second half came around, with roy keane getting sent off it was going to be a struggle especially when bergkamp scored an equliser. the game went to extra time and the greatest goal ever scored in the fa cup came by that man ryan giggs, he took on about half of the arsenal team and blasted the ball in to the top corner. So with united progreesing to the final they had juventus to contend with, and after drawing with them 1-1 in the first leg at old trafford they had to go over to turin and put in a fantastic perfomance and did they do that? you bet they did, united went 2-0 down and there didnt seem any way back until captain fantastic roy keane stepped up and planted a header in to juventus's goal, which inspired yorke to get another just before half time. In the second half andy cole wrapped it up by taking the ball round the keeper and slotting it in, full speed ahead barcelona!!!.
May arrived arsenal lost a crucial game against leeds which left united only needing to beat tottenham and the premiership would be theres. so tottenham arrived and in the first half gave united a scare when les ferdinand scored, which silenced old trafford. but just before half time beckham scored and the place erupted, the second half came and only minutes into it andy cole scored which eventully sealed the game and the premiership united now owned a third of the treble. fa cup final cup final day came and the exitment was over whelming, in the first half teddy sheringham scored on the 11th minute to the delight of the united fans. seven minutes in to the second half paul scholes slotted the ball in to the newcastle goal and the cup was uniteds and they now owned 2 thirds of the treble. european cup final this was the big one the game united fans had been waiting for 30 long years, the game didnt start well when a free-kick from Basler put bayern 1-0 up, the treble was starting to slip as the minutes ticked away. injury time came and all seemed lost until david beckham whipped in a cross it fell to giggs and then went to sheringham who equlised, united fans were jubilant. everyone was now anticipating extra time until david beckham took another corner whipped it in it hit sheringham and fell to solskjaer who blasted the ball in to the bayern net which completed the unique treble. a must for all sport fans!!
