...are evident as ever in Man On Fire. Admittedly, there are scenes which are there for increased effect, but this doesn't mean the film falls off or becomes silly. You may argue the added explosions add to the toughness and grit. Up steps hi-fi director Tony Scott then for a thriller about one mans quest to right wrongs and kick serious ass. One thing’s for sure, it’s all going to get very ugly indeed.
It takes a while to get going, with a 45 minute bonding session between Creasy and Pita. This isn’t as sickly as it sounds though, ...

Advantages: Some of the best acting all year Disadvantages: Length
...been out a fortnight.
Man on Fire would appeal to the more masculine taste ~ despite the global appeal of the cute blonde girl, it is mostly a Denzel Washington show, and Creasy is just too far removed in character and action for most of us to engage and empathise with. You shouldn't expect to sit through it with a few beers in you, but the film lends itself to a long evening in the cinema, where the wide-screen shots can best be appreciated.
However ... ...worthy of a recommendation.
Man on Fire was a real border-line case ~ likeable? Unlikeable? Recommendable, or too long and tragedic? In the end , it gets three stars for being competent, but not recommended. It's most impressive when compared to Collateral, but doesn't quite have the pulling power to earn a recommendation. ...

Advantages: Great revenge action film that throws you into the heart of the story Disadvantages: Over long, poor dialogue in parts, can't decide what sort of film it wants to be
...Washington plays John Creasey, a man whose CV says a lot about his past special ops expertise but doesn't say much about his status of today, which is grizzled alcoholic looking for work. Enter Christopher Walken who gets him a job as a bodyguard protecting the daughter, Pita Ramos, (Dakota Fanning) of a Mexican industrialist (Marc Anthony) based in the heart of a corrupt Mexico City, where kidnappings are frequent.
Needless to say, Creasey's tortured ... ...invited to observe how a man is able to redeem himself by getting revenge on those responsible for just one of those kidnappings. And to be fair, it's done well. Denzel Washington plays this part very well, as you would expect him to. No-one can play tortured, lost soul better than Denzel on a good day, and you can't help rooting for him throughout. He gradually introduces humanity to his character, and some of the scenes between him & Dakota Fanning ...

Man On Fire
This is what a real revenge flick is all about. Death, destruction, anger and retribution. You will see that revenge is a dish best served cold. This is a gritty, dark, grisly movie. Not one for the kids!!!
Denzel Washington plays John Creasy, a former assassin that has been hired to protect a nine year old girl, Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning), due to the wave of kidnappings sweeping Mexico. Creasy, who initially is unable to put up with ... ...then goes on a one man mission to heap vengeance on anyone who is involved in or benefiting financially from her abduction.
Tony Scott has delivered his best film since the first-rate True Romance. The direction is second to none and visually this will take movies to another level. Grainy and hazed cinematography, some obscure camera work coupled with what can only be described as ground breaking subtitles show Scott’s versatility and how much hard ...

DVD Description
John Creasy (Denzel Washington) is a lost soul. A former government operative, he has become an alcoholic nomad, searching for inspiration and redemption. An old friend (Christopher Walken) who lives in Mexico gets Creasy a job as a bodyguard for nine-year-old Lupita 'Pita' Ramos (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of Mexican Samuel (Marc Anthony) and his American wife Lisa (Radha Mitchell). Creasy's primary job is to protect Pita from the kidnapping attempts that are an increasing menace to the children of Mexico City's wealthy. A man of few words and many secrets, Creasy initially balks at Pita's attempts to befriend him, but soon a bond grows between the precocious child and this lonely man who is tormented by his past. When Pita is kidnapped despite Creasy's valiant attempts to save her, he will do anything to bring all of those involved to justice. His fury unravels a net of almost unimaginable corruption and greed in the process. Director Tony Scott (TOP GUN, CRIMSON TIDE) builds the relationship between Creasy and Pita in the first half of the film in order to justify Creasy's violent actions in the latter half, and in the process he does a fine job of keeping the film's tension consistently high.
