Mamma mia is by far my favourite movie of the summer this year! Based upon the songs of ABBA it is one of those films which can be enjoyed by a wide span of ages. My mother loves it, i love it despite the fact i never really grew up with the songs and even the 7 year old i nanny for cant stop watching it! I watched the stage show when i was younger and never really enjoyed it so the movie was a surprising love of mine!
It tells the story of a 20 year old girl called Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried (think Mean Girls). Sophie is engaged to Sky played by Dominic Cooper. The one problem is that Sophie wants to find her father before she gets married, so upon discovery of her mother's diary she sends out three letters to three possible fathers asking them to attend her wedding. What follows is a comdeic series of events in which Sophie attempts to discover the identity of her father, whilst hiding it from her mother, Donna, all merely days before her wedding!
The DVD features the much loved sing a long option, although i find the placing of the words a little annoying after a while, as they are nearer the middle of the screen then the bottom! However its perfect for kids who want to sing and dance with the cast!
There are also a lot of interesting behing the scenes type documentaries on the dvd, including a behind the scenes look at the making of Mamma Mia, a video about the making of the music and also the inclusion of the gimme gimme gimme! music video. One of my favourite extras was the deleted song, in which Amanda Seyfried sang "The Name Of The Game".
The film is rated P.G which i think is valid, although there are a few enuiendos so to speak, its really nothing that bad and definately nothing young children will catch on to! Total running time is stated as being 1 hour 44 mins approx.
The only trouble i have with this dvd is that it plays in Widescreen and when i tried to change this on my television as i don't have a widescreen tv the picture became a but pixellated and therefore lower quality, however this may be down to my own lack of technical skills and my tv!
Songs featured in the movie:
I have a dream/ Thank you for the music. Waterloo Mamma mia Dancing Queen Honey Honey Gimme Gimme Gimme! A man after midnight Voulez Vous Lay All Your Love Take A Chance On Me When All Is Said And Done The Winner Takes It All Slipping Through My Fingers Does Your Mother Know SOS Souper Trouper Our Last Summer

Advantages: Feel-good fun, sure to be enjoyed by teenagers, twenty-somethings and even grand-parents! Disadvantages: Brosnan's singing? Actually it's an amusing highlight!
