Mamma Mia!
Finally I've seen the film and afterwards I was jumping with energy the movie boasted me with, so I couldn't not start writing this review. I can't tell about elsewhere, but here in Prague Mamma Mia! has become a symbol of this summer, full of fun, dancing and singing, love, sun, friends, joy and happy ends. It was my first time that sitting in the cinema I would feel all the ppl there shared sth and created such a happy and cheerful atmosphere like this time when everybody sang along to the songs.
Cast Meryl Streep - Donna Amanda Seyfried - Sophie Pierce Brosnan - Sam Colin Firth - Harry Stellan Skarsgard - Bill Christine Baranski - Tanya Julie Walters - Rosie
Running time: 100 mins. Director: Phyllida Lloyd Screenplay: Catherine Johnson in cooperation with ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus Rating: PG-13 which in my humble opinion is nonsense as there is neither strong language nor any explicit or hidden sexual content.
The storyline We're on a beautiful Greek island where Sophie lives with her mother Donna, an owner of a hotel who's single but men aren't her problem as she is this kind of an independent aging hippie who now has to worry about the business and most importantly at the momemnt, her daughter's wedding as Sophie plans to marry her boyfriend Sky. The wedding will be perfect besides she doesn't have a father to give ger away. Spying in Donna's old diaries she realizes there are three possible fathers, so why not invite them all to the wedding and then see who's the right one? As crazy as this sounds, Sophie is a girl of action and sends the invites. It's obvious the three men, as different as they could be, accept, else there wouldn't be a point in the film, and the fun can start.
Sam, Harry and Bill meet already during their trip to the island, but they have yet no idea how closely bound they actually are. Well, as close you can imagine two businessmen and a lone sea wolf to be, a woman has to be the joint point.
In the meantime two best friends of Sophie come as well as Donna's old friends Tanya and Rosie (the Dynamos) arrive to have a reunion and talk about the good old times. That was the beginning that I didn't really like, everybody meeting other people, screaming in overdone joy, laughing and giggling about things you have no idea of. Luckily this was over soon and the film started to "be normal".
Sophie of course wants to hide the "fathers" from her mother, silly enough to believe it would work and that in the end Donna would jump of joy to meet only the real father. Of course Donna discovers the guys rather pretty soon and if she jumps, it's not of joy as any person who can imagine having their three old-time ex boyfriends brought into their house all the sudden can guess. On the other hand, she's not so determinate to get rid of them to kick them off the island. Further we watch Sophie meeting each of the men separately and finding out sth that makes him Mr. Father in her eyes, so in the end all of them are supposed to give her away only they don't know about the other two. Quite a messed up situation based on good old miscommunication. Who's gonna give Sophie away in the end and who is the father? It's a comedy, so shall the comedy proceed to its happy end we all knew would be coming.
My opinion
Overall, I did like the film a lot. It was easy to just sit back in the packed cinema, open my Coke and stuff myself with popcorn watching a light comedy movie you don't really need to think about (besides thinking "omg, Meryl's hot!"), only enjoy the parts you like. It was cool to hear all those old ABBA songs that I just love and had been growing up with.
However, the were a few patterns in the film that annoyed me. It was impossible to not notice the three triplets - three women Donna, Tanya and Rosie, three guys Sam, Harry and Bill and three young girls Sophie and her two best friends whose names I don't remember. Had there been two best friends of Sky, Sophie's fiancé, it would be like a matchmaker's show. Nevertheless I did see the matches from the beginning - Donna as the strongest female character was obvious to get together with Sam, as well as Rosie was with Bill, both of them being a little on the weird side. Tanya reminded me of a transvestite or transgender woman, so having a local black boy hit on her felt rather funny to me and well, Harry turned out gay, what more do you want to make everyone happy? A traditional strong couple Donna and Sam, the young couple Sky and Sophie deciding to savour their freedom a bit more, but still growing strong together, an independent woman Rosie finding her soulmate Bill and a gay guy Harry hooking up with a local lad, all being friends and having happy time. It's a bit of Hollywood's happy-end cliché. Originally there used to be a prince living happily ever after with a princess, now there has to be sth for the 4% minority, too. Don't get me wrong, I'm a proud part of that minority myself, but if I hate sth, it's clichés, especially if screwed onto a mainstream movie with a mainstream plot like this. The film was full of funny lines and gags performed mostly by the three ladies, who didn't need much to go wild and entertain themselves and anybody around, the highligh of their show was a performance of Dancing Queen they sang during Sophie's hen party.
During the film there actually was more singing and dancing than I expected, sometimes it felt good, sometimes not so good, the songs were implanted into the story. Should I evaluate the musical part in general, I'd say it was quite good. I did very much like Meryl Streep's singing, I think her performance of Mamma Mia! was the best song in the whole movie and the little show she gave with Christine Baranski and Julie Walters as The Dynamos was sheer fun, without any depth, but fun. As Streep herself said: "I'm really doing this to embarass my 20-sth-year-old children. The dancing will mortify them and they'll have to move to Alaska or some place like that." Streep's duet of The Winner Takes It All with Pierce Brosnan felt a little pathetic though. What I've heard from the critics was that Pierce Brosnan was the worst singer in the film and I have to agree with that. BUT on the other hand I appreciate despite being scared of the role, he didn't give up and sang his part. I wouldn't cathegorize the film as a musical, because it was like fifty fifty music and story. For me, the actors have given great acting performance and I don't care so much that the singing of some of them was not perfect. It's more important to me that they all sang themselves and during acting, without using playback. Had the singing been playbacked (not to mention sang by pro singers) just for the sake of having a flawless musical, it wouldn't have worked for me.
The cast was good in my opinion, I've already confessed my obssession with Meryl Streep and I enjoyed her like I always enjoy her acting and I'm convinced that despite she's able to act any role, she's made for comedy. As Donna she was spontaneous and wild, it was great to watch her. The other actors did well, too, the only who for me felt really misplaced, was Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, she just didn't convince me and was too much of the happy-go-lucky girl, plus I didn' really feel she made the film about herself and her wedding. The most memorable quote of the film comes from a character, who in my opinion wasn't given much space, Sophie's fiance Sky: "It's my last night of freedom, which is what some might see it, but for me it's the last night before the greatest adventure of my life."
I do recommend the film to Meryl Streep fans as well as to everyone who can enjoy a romantic comedy, likes ABBA and just wants to see an upcheering film. I felt this would be a great movie to watch at a party, get a few drinks, sing along and have some laughs. Usually I prefer serious movies and dramas, but hey, I'm really happy I went to see Mamma Mia!
