This review is for the film only.
It was actually my twins that wanted to go and see Mamma Mia as they love musicals, I was a bit sceptical but we went any way and this is what I thought about the film.
A Bit about the Film -
The film is set on a idyllic Greek island.
(Meryl Streep) who plays Donna is a single mum who owns her own hotel and has a daughter (Amanda Seyfried) played by Sophie who is getting married to (Dominic Cooper) who plays Sky.
She is desperate to invite her father to her wedding because she wants him to walk her down the aisle, only she doesn't know know who it is, all she knows is that it will be one of three and she only knows this because she secretly read her mums diary and found out that she was with 3 men all around the same time.
(Colin Firth) who plays Harry
is a proper gent, (Pierce Brosnan) who plays Sam and is a real ladies man and (Stellan Skarsgård) who plays Bill, who is not really father material he just wants to have fun.
Donna doesn't know that her daughter knows about the 3 men and certainly doesn't know that she has invited them until she finds them hiding in a barn and is completly shocked.
Sophie thinks she will instantly know who her farther is but she doesn't and spends time with all 3 to get to know them.
Donna has invited her two closest friends (Julie Walters) Rosie and (Christine Baranski) who plays Tanya. They are both absolutely crazy. They were all in a band called Donna and the Dynamos. They have not seen each other for ages so it's real reunion.
The film is set over a mad 24 hours and boy do they cram a lot into it.
Does she find out who her farther is ? All I can say is there is a twist at the end.
The whole story is told using the songs from Abba a very popular 70's group which is also a musical.
What I thought about the Film -
I thought it was hilarious, all the characters are so funny in their own way, they are bonkers, whacky just plain mad. From start to finish it keeps you gripped, going through the story and then just bursting into song, but they do it in such a funny way. Some of the dance routines have you laughing your socks off.
I thought the script was very comical, some parts were so hilarious not only me but the whole of the picture house were laughing even my girls found it funny.
I knew all the songs and my girls knew most of them so I kept bursting into song, I had to control myself in some parts, but I did have a sneaky look round to make sure I wasn't the only one and I think almost every one there were singing, you just couldn't help yourself.
I thought the way the put the film together was spot on very uplifting, not what I expected at all. Sometimes when you see the trailers on the T.V it looks really good but when you see the film itself the trailers were the best bits, well I can honestly say the trailers are just a taster of what's to come.
I also thought the singing was brilliant seeing Pierce Brosnan singing was very funny, I have never seen him sing before and from the James Bond character to singing in a musical is an experience. But no i can honestly say they all sang really well.
I felt like at the end I wanted to clap and shout for an encore, what am I like.
It left us all feeling really happy at the end of it and I can't wait for it to come out on DVD I think my girls will watch it to death.
My eldest daughter didn't come with us to watch it but after I told her about it she wished she had come with us.
Conclusion -
I would definitely say go and watch it if it is your sort of film, even if it isn't you might be surprised, it is very funny and will have you singing even if you try not to. Worth every penny. Compared to other musicals i think it is far better, because of the way it has been set out. It has some real good one liners, i found very witty.
