Along with her old friends Rosie and Tanya form her band 'Donna and the Dynamo's' she tries to get rid of them for the wedding. What will happen when they find out why they're really here and will Sophie find out which one is her father?
The cast: I thought the cast were very well chosen for the role and I think they did well choosing Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried for the roles of mother and daughter as they looked alike and are both very good actors in their own right. Meryl Streep as ever is great and does her part well showing the shock of seeing three of your exes all in one go after years of not having contact! Amanda Seyfried I thought personally was excellent - her singing I thought was great and with a role that required her to be less high school queen and more mature I thought she did well.
The three actors chosen for the roles of the three possible father were also a good choice in my opinion as all played completely different characters and this worked well too within the film. The first was Pierce Brosnan who plays the character of Sam and played quite a suave and charming man type figure. He was not really much different to how he is in other films I have seen him in but it worked well. The only thing I would say is that if anybody he was the one that couldn't really sing! Colin Firth is his usual bumbling self in the role of Harry but, again this suits the role of the film. He is good and I thought had a nice subtle role if that makes sense as nothing really stood out to much in his part. Lastly we have Stellan Skarsgård who plays Bill. He is the more rugged outdoors type in the film and does his part well even though again there doesn't seem to be much that stands out in particular.
I was impressed by the roles that Julie Walters and Christine Baranski plays as Donn's friends. Julie Walters is great as the funny friend and Christine Baranski is also fab as the money digging man chaser. They both make the film funny and interesting with some great scenes and songs that really stand out.
Overall thoughts: I was unsure if I would like this film as I last saw 'Hairspray' a while back which was the last modern film made that involves a lot of singing and dancing around. I didn't enjoy that and was not sure if this would take the same route in my mind! However I think the difference is clear that this contains some classic songs that most people know and love and so that is what makes it more enjoyable to watch. Also there was the comedy element that adds to it along with a great cast. Sure I did think at some points that maybe too much singing was taking place but, overall I think it is definitely something I could watch again. In particular I loved the scene with Julie Walters and Stellan Skarsgård doing the classic song 'Take a chance on me' as thought it to be humorous and very apt to the point in the film.
Interesting fact: Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson both make cameo appearances during the film - one on a boat and one during the 'Dancing Queen' scene. Both are also playing Piano's at the time.
I would recommend this film to anyone who is an ABBA fan as I'm sure you couldn't dislike it as it's fun and easy to watch with great actors and actresses. The cinema when I went was rammed with women and there seemed to be a lot of people singing along to the film too so overall it would make for a good night out at the cinema!

Advantages: really funny, heartwarming good old fashioned fun! Disadvantages: Pierce Brosnan...actually nah, its fantastic!
...far, the best characters in Mamma Mia are Donna played by Streep, her sidekicks played by Julie Walters (just sheer brilliance!) and Christine Baranski and Colin Firth. Pierce Brosnan, as I'm sure you have heard, is an absolutely AWFUL singer, and both times I went to the cinema the audience reacted the same way - with horror, discomfort at seeing James Bond make a fool of himself, and eventually everyone just seemed to collapse in hysterics. I say ... ...saw an interview with him where he admitted that the singing was atrocious but that he enjoyed making the film immensely.
In fact, everyone in the film looked like they had the most amazing time, after the film is over there is a sing along with all the cast characters in ABBA costumes, they looked like they were just having a blast and that everyone got on really well - which in my opinion just makes the film special. There are some teary moments, ...

Advantages: Such fun all over Disadvantages: Not sure about some of the casting
worth a go just to test the water as it is pure fun.
With pretty much every well known Abba song featuring at length, MammaMia! is a wonderful tale of fun and potential disaster, with a dreamy wedding take on it. For a while, the DVD will cost the full retail price, so it may be worth renting or waiting for it to drop in price a bit. Either way, give it a go. Abba - we thank you for the music! ...
Advantages: great fun, good singing, dancing and acting Disadvantages: a bit cheesy, some weak performances
The DVD version of MammaMia has been produced beautifully, recreating something that was so magical on the big screen that people feared it would scale down to DVD badly. They were wrong.
Starting with the casing, you know that you are in for a great experience with MammaMia! The great photo on the front of the case speaks of fun filled Grecian escapades. The DVD offers not only the choice of play, special features, subtitles, language etc., but also to play the sing along version, a great bit of fun for a rainy day with the family.
The plot of MammaMia! is good, considering the musical was written for the songs, not the songs for the musical. Converted from the plot of the stage version, the film version is good enough to be memorable and keep you interested. Songs generally fit the story, and the idea of a girl searching ...

It was actually my twins that wanted to go and see MammaMia as they love musicals, I was a bit sceptical but we went any way and this is what I thought about the film.
A Bit about the Film -
The film is set on a idyllic Greek island.
(Meryl Streep) who plays Donna is a single mum who owns her own hotel and has a daughter (Amanda Seyfried) played by Sophie who is getting married to (Dominic Cooper) who plays Sky.
She is desperate to invite her father to her wedding because she wants him to walk her down the aisle, only she doesn't know know who it is, all she knows is that it will be one of three and she only knows this because she secretly read her mums diary and found out that she was with 3 men all around the same time.
(Colin Firth) who plays Harry is a proper gent,

Playful exuberance is the order of the day....Waterloo lures you into a glorious world of upbeat melodies, glitter, sequins and flares, and leaves you dancing out of the cinema (Sight and Sound, 22/10/2008)
DVD Description
MAMMA MIA became a West End smash when it hit London back in late nineties. With a story framed around the music of the Swedish pop band Abba, crowds loved its raucous, dance party vibe. Now it comes to the silver screen, with some truly delightful performances from the likes of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. It is the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young woman living on a picturesque Greek island with her mother, Donna (Streep). Together, Donna and Sophie run a ramshackle island inn, and they are in the midst of preparing for Sophie's wedding. As the wedding approaches, Sophie becomes troubled by the fact that she has never known her father. She was the result of one of her mother's summer flings, and her mother has never revealed her father's identity. When Sophie stumbles upon her mother's diary, she learns that there are three possible men who could be her dad. Without telling her mother, she invites all three to her wedding. When Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Brosnan), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) all arrive at the same time, Donna is of course shocked and overwhelmed by seeing her old lovers again after such a long time. She turns to her two best friends, Tanya (Christine Baranaki) and Rosie (Julia Walters), for their support, and vows to just get through the wedding and weekend. Meanwhile, Sophie spends time with each man, determined to learn the truth. Major hi-jinks and confusion ensues, all amidst the utterly romantic scenery, and the rather irresistible, swelling love ballads. Streep has a lovely singing voice, and to watch her throw herself into this whimsical role is truly a delight. She looks like she is having a ball, and it is hard not to shimmy along with her. Baranski reliably delivers an over-the-top showstopper, and Brosnan's tender singing voice makes his character all the more touching. The film strives to be a jubilant celebration of mother/daughter relationships and the love between good friends, and it is hard to resist its many charms.
