A Payne in the Ass

Advantages: Some decent CGI angels.
Disadvantages: Poor direction, writing, performances and score.

Max Payne is a maverick cop determined to find the killers of his wife and baby. Sidelined to the cold case unit by the force, he looks for the murderers by night, trawling the dark underworld in the hopes of finding answers. While doing so he encounters drug addicts under the influence of designer drug Valkyrie, which is incredibly addictive and gives its users terrifying visions and superhuman strength. He also forges an uneasy alliance with assassin Mona Sax and suffers a terrible betrayal? Will there ever be a decent computer game adaptation on the big screen? The more I see of them, the less likely it appears there will ever be one and this movie is no exception. Review of Max Payne (DVD)

Just didn't feel the Payne

Advantages: It's fairly short and there are some lovely scenes visually
Disadvantages: Weak plot, mediocre performances

this film... mediocre. My husband calls Mark Wahlberg "that guy who's trying to be Matt Damon and not quite getting there". To clarify, my husband's not even all that keen on Matt Damon! Having failed to connect with Payne, as a viewer, I largely shut off. I found my attention wandering. I think at one point I lost five minutes of the film as I read dooyoo reviews of the film, which were significantly more entertaining than the dvd. It's hard to comment on the other performances as it seemed that many fairly strong actors were given little to work with. I've seen Mila Kunis and Olga Kurylenko give stronger performances than this. Beau Bridges played the baddie in such a stereotypical manner it was almost funny (though failed to be funny in the way that something like "The Spirit" managed to make its baddies funny).
