In Indian film industry, Farah Khan is a renowned name for her choreography. So, I was really interested while going to the theatre to watch Main Hon Na. There was another point of interest regarding this movie. That was its star cast. I must admit I am a fan of Shahrukh Khan. Not only him, we have Susmita Sen in a cute role, we also have Suneil Shetty, Zahid Khan and recent bollywood beauty Amrita Rao. All of them did justice to their roles. But I have got some advices to the authority. Please stop copying from the foreign films and try to be some more realistic in your scripts. Come on! The audience just doesn’t go to the theatre to see their favorite actors dancing and walking around. They want to see some work from them, or else they may not be the favorites anymore. I’m truly disappointed with Farah after seeing the movie.

**** The “STORY” ****

Indian army plans to release several Pakistani villagers caught for crossing the border and imprisoned for a long time under the command of an able Army General. A rebel named Raghaban (Suneil Shetty) wants to make things difficult for the officer. In a press conference, while the General was addressing the audience, Raghaban breaks in and tries to kill the General. His life was however saved by a brigadier of Army and another officer, Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh Khan). But unfortunately Brigadier Sharma becomes seriously injured and dies on the way to the hospital. Raghaban however, successfully escapes. On the way to the hospital, we come to know that Major Ram was the son of Brigadier Sharma, and to his surprise, Ram comes to know that his father had another wife and a son somewhere in India. They left the house because his father has brought him in his house. His father asks him to find out his brother and perform the last rites together.

Eventually Raghaban threatens the army General that if he doesn’t stop his project (Named as Project Milaap in the movie) then he’ll definitely kill his only daughter who is now studying in a college in a hill station in India. General was very nervous. He confesses that he always wanted a son who could be an army officer like him. So he couldn’t give his daughter the love and care that he would give to his son. His daughter Sanjana (Amrita Rao) also hates him for that and she stays away from him. She won’t accept any army personnel as security officer, as he hates the army uniform. So he calls Major Ram to go to the college and get admitted as a student. Now that is ridiculous. Being an army officer, who has completed his training at National Defense Academy about 10 years ago, and never been in any formal collage, it was extremely different for him to go there as a student. Anyway, he also has to search his brother and stepmother. Now that’s a problem. In Indian culture one has to obey his father’s last wishes, and as an officer of Indian army, he must do his duty. Anyway, storywriter comes in the scene and gives the story a little twist. The general tells him that his brother is also studying in the same college. The problem solved. Shahrukh packs off for Darjeeling, a beautiful hill station in West Bengal to complete two duties, to search for his brother and to protect Sanjana as a student in the same college.

It is obvious that the fellow students make fun of his appearance and age. So, if the hero is always humiliated, then the director always gives him a chance to regain his fame. So gets Shahrukh. In the college database, he finds out his brother’s photograph and eventually his brother gets into a trouble in the college at that very moment. So he does some superman kind of stuff and saves his brother. That brings him close to the students.

Now, if hero is there, heroine is bound to come. So comes Chandni (Susmita Sen), a chemistry teacher of the same college. Major Ram at once falls in love. Don’t ask more about this Chandni character. She didn’t have enough to act. She was used as a glamour idol, that’s it. Hero and heroine are there, now the turn of the villain to come. Comes Raghaban, trying to kill Sanjana. Ram protects her by all means. May it be chasing a car with a rickshaw, or may be by saving himself from the spit bubbles coming from the mouth of another professor (Remember Neo dodging the bullets in Matrix?). Indian heroes are famous of doing impossible stuffs and why Shahrukh will be exception? After some terrific scenes, with some good comedy, and abnormal stunts, the film finally ends. As usual, the badman is punished. But does it leave any impact in our mind? I think it doesn’t, but it surely raises some questions. Lets discuss it now.

*** Analyze ***

One good advise for Shahrukh at the beginning. Don’t go for any more movies that involve actions from your role. Better stick to your romantic roles, you look much better in those roles. Read the script before you sign. Bollywood is changing, and we just don’t want to see another movie of brothers separated long ago and then comes closer after the movie. Those things stink, really. For Suneil Shetty, please don’t wear those skintight T-shirt and open chest jacket. You’ve gathered some fat in your belly. Try spending some more time in the gym. For Susmita, look at the role before you sign. We want to see some acting from you. We appreciate your glamour, but glamour is not everything.

I’ve never seen more stupid action sequences than those presented in this movie. How can a rickshaw chase a car? How fast can a man paddle? If he takes the shortest route, then also this is quite impossible. Some scenes are somehow nice. The comedy parts of Satish Shah and the principal of the college are good. Some good tunes, some good moments, that’s all. The rest of the things are not up to the mark. Shahrukh tried his best with the tight limitations, but if the story is not up to the mark, what can anyone do? And I think bollywood has changed its same old strategy. That is making villain of Pakistan. This is ridiculous. Nice to see some films coming out without making villain of Pakistan and reflecting the recent social and political strategy of India regarding Pakistan. Don’t forget, countrymen from both of the countries want peace.

*** Plus points ***

Shahrukh is the certain plus point. Even he is getting creases in his face, he is great. Susmita is adorable. Amrita Rao proves herself once more. Zahid Khan was successful creating an impact. Satish Shah is good in comedy. That’s all..

*** Minus Points ***

Script, visualization, special effects. Nothing was up to the mark. Shahrukh needs to re check his dresses in the movie.

*** Conclusions ***

If you are a buyer, I don’t have any suggestion for you. If you like Shahrukh, you may like this movie, if you like to watch good movies, you’re certainly going to be disappointed. Think twice before you buy. Good Luck..

I found this film to be quite good and found the action scenes quite funny. Different from the usual "dhishum dhishum" action. I think they poached some of the action scene ideas from The Matrix though which is a bit naughty. My husband was upset that there was so little of Sushmita Sen in the film too! lol, Millie :)

Good review but you really need to check your typos and spelling/grammar. Can't agree with most of your thoughts on the film - I felt it was excellent and the unbelievable takings generated suggest most of the world agrees. The only character who was poor in the film was Zahid Khan, whose dancing in the college song was laughable. I would have hoped he would have picked up more from the great SRK. Shah Rukh was fantastic as was Amrita Rao but I do agree that Sushmita was under used.

I'll give this one a miss then. Good review. Maureen
