Advantages: A wonderful piece of cinema Disadvantages: Depends on your opinion of foreign language films
...the battlefield all feature strongly in the film.
The film opens with Hedd Wyn's posthumous chairing at the Eisteddfod, a golden light is reflected on the chair and 'triumphant' music is heard before the scene suddenly cuts to the trenches, the lighting is cold and grey and the mood obviously sombre. The sound of gunfire and bombs can be heard before they fade out and are replaced by Mahler's Song Of The Earth sung in German, emphasizing the impact of the scene. The soldiers go over the top and Elis is soon fatally wounded and the rest of the film is shown in flashbacks as he lies dying on the battlefield. Once more, the sound of gunfire fade out and womens voices are heard whispering lines from Elis' poetry.
Throughout the film we learn about Elis' life and women who played an importan role in his life, namely his mother, sisters and three...
