Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band has been on/off but one that has produced a series of fascinating albums. Despite secular works, it is for their Christmas collaborations that they are best known, especially the riotous seasonal tours (pantomimes and all). This outing took place in 1997 and spawned this live album, which leaves the capers behind and concentrates on the music. The usual clichés are firmly avoided in favour of the more obscure, with even familiar carols such as "Away In A Manger", "Ding Dong Merrily On High" and "I Saw Three Ships" presented on medieval instruments and in unfamiliar arrangements. Prior is in fine voice throughout, suited perhaps more to this style of music than the folk rock of Steeleye Span, and the Carnivals approach their task with gusto. Those looking for a studio album should try Carols and Capers which, like this release, proves that there is much more to Christmas music than Noddy Holder. --Phil Udell

If you're looking for a new and refreshing musical course through Christmas, then Gold, ... more
Frankincense & Myrrh may just do the trick. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band extend their musical relationship to a sixth album together, this time based on a Christmas theme that investigates the well-known Nativity tale from the perspective of the many cultures and traditions that gave it birth and sustenance over the last two millennia. Themes, rhythms, melodies and words reflecting African, Near-Eastern and Arabic heritages can all be found here, reaching back to Zoroastrian traditions and beyond. So Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar tell their own stories and give their own explanations for their journeys and even the animals in the manger pass on their points of view. Prior and the Carnival Band, practised hands at performing together live and in the studio, put together a seamless narrative event that captures the imagination and also has a textural graininess sufficient to repel all accusations of sentimentality or roseate visions. This music reflects the stuff of ordinary lives caught up in extraordinary events--exactly what Christmas is all about, you might well say. --Keith Shadwick

Advantages: A thoroughly great night out Disadvantages: Depends on your taste in music
MaddyPrior has the most beautiful voice. She used to be lead singer with Steeleye Span in the 70’s and I always loved their music – remember the hit All Around My Hat?
I saw Steeleye Span perform live at the open air concert at Cardiff Castle where 10CC were topping the bill. It had rained all afternoon and we were all soaked but as MaddyPrior took the stage the rain stopped! I didn't really know her at that time but the music was brilliant and her voice was so clear.
Well, now she sings with The CarnivalBand, a group of 5 musicians who can play an amazing number of instruments. As you take your seats for the performance the stage is littered with guitars, fiddles, drums of all sorts, bagpipes (Irish and Flemish), oboe and many instruments I’d never even heard of!

Advantages: Looks very Christmassy, Well Directed Disadvantages: The people look creepy
If you do not know the story of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol there is probably something wrong with your think tank. It's possibly one of the most re-told stories of all time and probably has more film-isations than any other book, possibly even trumping the bible. This is Walt Disney's third re-telling alone for God?s sake.
Anyway for those who live in a hole or have dementia, A Christmas Carol is the story of Ebonezer Scrooge (Jim Carey) and is passage by fire from twisted, grumpy, old miser who hates Christmas to the very opposite (except he stays old).
After the death of Scrooge's business partner, Scrooge has got even more miserable and spiteful than ever and everyone fears and avoids him. Even his sole employee, Bob Cratchet (Gary Oldman) lives in misery, not allowed to light a fire in the freezing office ...
Advantages: As close as it gets to the real thing? Disadvantages: May be uncomfortably close for some?
"The heroes have crosses above their heads, the ones that are buried in the cemeteries. Those are the true heroes, not us. We're just part of the works, that's all. And we thank God we got back alive." A veteran of Easy Company.
First of all, I realize that my review about Band of Brothers is quite lengthy, and for that I apologize because I am aware that long commentaries have the habit of becoming tedious or even self indulgent.. But I feel I would be doing a great disservice to the Band of Brothers experience by not being as thorough as possible.
Experiencing Band of Brothers starts not in the battlefields of Europe, nor in Camp Toccoa, Georgia. It begins in your hand, with the classically beautiful packaging of the 10 episode, six disc DVD set that is housed in a metal tin that at first glance resembles a military I.D. dog ...
