This movie was full of good acting, but a poor story line - some more creativity could have been used in terms of when they got to the island of Madagascar; there was too little of the penguins - they were more entertaining than the rest of the cast.
The story is very simple: take 4 New York City Zoo animals and throw them into the wild - and all of them are natural enemies in the wild - the lion (Alex) naturally preys on zebras, such as Marty, as well as giraffes, such as Melman and possibly hippos, like Gloria (I stand to be corrected on that last one).
However, as much as everyone likes their artificial habitat, Marty wants to go to wild - after running away from the zoo, Marty's friends come to save him and are then penalised by being sent back to the wild, but because of the penguins trying to get to Antartica, Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman's crates all fall overboard and they land up on Madagascar. After several days of surviving without steak, Alex begins to become the predator he was meant to be - sort of - and actually bit Marty on the backside. The natives on the island (some animals resembling squirrels) are hunted by the "foosa", who Alex scares off, but because he is starved, he runs away, so that he won't hurt anyone. This was meant to be a movie about "real friends stick together" where Marty ignores everyone's fear of Alex and tries to help him - and it worked in that aspect, although I expected much more from this movie, after seeing all the hype.
However, the extras on this DVD set was off the hook!
Extras include the usual behind the scenes footage and interviews, which really helped me to appreciate the effort that went into making this movie, as well as the concepts that went into it. There was the "secret code" for the penguins, for the younger audience to figure out (a few letters are scatter throughout the menu and you have to figure out the correct "code" by arranging the letters in the correct sequence). There are several extras, such as the "goofs" where the rendering went wrong. According to the extras, the fact that the realism is a little "off" was actually deliberate, because the novelty of realistic animation had worn off, and they were going for a more cartoon-like feel. In one sense, they had acheived it (only in Looney Toons would penguins hijack a container ship and go to Antarctica, and then change their minds) with their warped features on Marty (just check his nose), Melman's neurotic moments...it was well done.
It is a matter of time before the penguins get their own series, I am sure, but their christmas caper was well put-together, with the old lady who assaults Alex and her dog (you have to see it to understand).
The extras really put value into this DVD set.
WARNING: If you watch this with children, you will be taunted with the song "I like to move it" and the weird accent it was sung in for a couple days well.
Generally entertaining DVD
