The Plot
Set in an unspecified, post-apocalyptic future, Mel Gibson plays Max Kotanski, a 'Bronze', a futuristic law enforcement officer.
Max is a married man with a small baby son, known only as 'Sprog', he has a work partner, 'Goose', a dare devil type of man, who is fearless in his pursuit of wrong doers.
The plot shows the viewer a world where petrol is running out and society is breaking down. Bike gangs are running wild and the cops are powerless to stop them due to human rights laws whenever they do make an arrest.
The world Max patrols is inhabited by gangs of barbaric bikers who wage high-speed war on the country roads. The most notorious of these biker gangs is the Glory Riders, led by a psychotic boss named Toecutter.
When one of the Glory Riders clan, 'The Knightrider', is killed in a high-speed prison break, his biker brothers vow revenge on Max Kotanski, the person that they hold responsible.
The ensuing action is toe curlingly gruesome in parts as the biker gang leave no person connected to Max Kotanski untouched, including his family and friends. . I won't say more here for fear of spoiling the story line for others.
Availability and cost
My copy of the DVD had been sitting unwatched in the cupboard for ages and I do not recall where we bought it or for how much.
A quick search shows that www.amazon.co.uk is selling this DVD for £1.49 new or from 79p used and www.ebay.co.uk currently has it listed from 99p.
My Thoughts and Conclusion
For a film that first hit the cinema screens in 1979, Mad Max has stood the test of time. The film was as mentioned earlier in the review, the first in the three Mad Max films and Max Kotanski is the archetypal anti-hero.
The plot of this, the first Mad Max movie is fast moving and well paced. The acting is to be fair a little wooden in places, yet the actual action scenes are very graphic and well thought out.
The plot builds tension as the story unfolds and has you fearing the worst in several places and feeling almost pleased when a 'baddie' gets their just desserts!
I found myself shouting at the screen on one occasion when Max was repairing his car and his wife wandered off for a walk, leaving their child sitting alone on a rug, as I was sure that the bikers would take him. If you want to know whether they did or not, you'll have to watch the DVD!
The 18 classification is justified as the violence and implied violence of the film are definitely not scenes you would wish a youngster to watch. That said, I did not feel that the film was gratuitously violent and the action shown was in keeping with the genre of the film.
I would recommend this DVD to others.
