This was the first of 3 movies in the mad max trilogy. It is essentially a low budget, futuristic thriller which benefited from the presence of one Mel Gibson, a then struggling Australian actor who was propelled to stardom with this vehicle.
He plays Max Rockatansky, a police officer who patrols a futuristic landscape with his partner "Goose" (Steve Bisley) preventing a criminal motorcycle gang who terrorise the area by stealing,raping and killing any passers by on the road. When one of the gang is captured by Max and Goose, he is held in custody at the precinct but forced to be released. The furious Goose later goes after the gang alone and is subsequently burned to death by having his car torched by the gang whilst he is still inside.
As a result Max decides to quit but is thrown back in when his wife a child are murdered by the same gang. He uses the custom "Replica Ford Falcon" vehicle owned by the police to target the gang and hunt them down for good.
A decent thriller, with exciting moments of violence. There is very little humour and the quality of production is noticebly low budget, but it benefits from seeming realistic despite its supposed post apocalyptic settings which seems tacked on.
Definitely a good film with a dark and realistic tone.
