Director: George Miller Producers: Byron Kennedy and Bill Miller Writers: George Miller, James McCausland and Byron Kennedy Stars: Mel Gibson, Steve Bisley, Joanne Samuel, Tim Burns , Hugh Keays-Byrne and Geoff Parry.
Released in April 1979 this Australian low budget action movie, set in the future and starring little known actor Mel Gibson… and possibly bringing the Australian movie industry onto the screens around the world.
** BRIEF PLOT **
Set in man kinds desolate future, with society already on the brink of destruction, a small police unit called Main Force Patrol (MFP) is struggling to protect the small townships scattered around the outback from a vicious motorcycle gang who are terrorising everyone in there path…
Max Rockatansky, (played by Mel Gibson), who is the MFP's best pursuit driver, is on the tail of an escaped prisoner, who happens to be a member of the motorcycle gang, when the chase ends in disaster… leading to Max's life becoming in more danger from the revengeful gang members…
When Max's wife, Jessie, (played by Joanne Samuel) meets up with the gang members, led by Toecutter, (played by Hugh Keays-Bryne), the outcome is horrific, changing Max's life forever…
Fuelled with an need for revenge, Max turns from the hunted to the hunter.
** IN CONCLUSION **
In the opening scenes this looks like a bit of a B-movie… and not a very good one at that… but after a few minutes you are drawn into the fast pace of this very low budget film, with it's horrific futuristic outlook of life in Australia…
'Mad Max' is an introduction into the movie world of the now famous Mel Gibson, giving him the chance to prove his acting abilities with this outrageous story line… opening up his life in Hollywood and beyond…and he does play his part as the angry, (or mad) police officer with a want for revenge to perfection, although his speaking role in this is pretty limited… the theme seeming to concentrate more on the violence than the oral side, giving Gibson a chance prove his abilities as an action hero without worrying too much about remembering complicated lines…
There are so many deaths and crashes that you lose count after a while, simply waiting for how the next death is going to occur, wondering whether it will be another laughable way to die, (due to the low budget special effects of course), but with that many disasters along one stretch of road one might start to believe the Australian outback is full of bodies and scrap metal?
This movie has a simple revenge plot, bringing out some animal characteristic from many of the cast, especially the brilliant acting of Keays-Bryne as the insane Toecutter and of course the cool headed Gibson as Mad Max… pure insane brilliance at it's best.
All though it will not be to every ones taste, with the sometimes tacky stunts and rather over the top special effects, especially in some of the death scenes, it is still a good movie to watch at least once for the shear action and entertainment.
* Would I recommend this…?
Yes I would… even if you're not a Gibson fan. It is everything that a good movie should be…action packed, full of thrills and out of control entertainment… It is without doubt 95 minutes of what is seen as hell on Earth, (and I don't just mean the film… although I feel certain people will say the movie is just that.. hell…?)
If you want to get a copy of this movie then you can get one from www.amzon.co.uk for less than a fiver.
Feel free, enjoy Mel Gibson in his younger days… if nothing else it's a laugh and paying a fiver for a laugh is cheap in these 'credit crunch' days…
