Mad Max is an excellent film, despite the fact that it kickstarted Mel Gibson's career. It features a violent post-apocalyptic desert world in which we follow a loner's attempts to survive in a cruel world populated by tribes, some of whom are peaceful and others decidedly are not, and the people he meets, fights and bonds with. Furthermore, Max is described as 'Mad' because he is driven by a desperate need to avenge his family's murder, which is why he is drifting aimlessly through this hell, searching for redemption for his inability to protect them. Mad Max set the standard for post-apocalyptic films by which all that follow must be measured; with simple, relatively low-budget costumes and scenery filmed in a dusty desert that very effectively evokes an atmosphere of doom, desperation and impending demise of humanity - and amid it all there is yet, somehow, hope. Perhaps the only question left is how the director of this could go on, twenty years later, to make the cutesy pig-that-thinks-its-a-sheepdog-film Babe?
