Review of 3 Action classics “We Were Soldiers, Mad Max and Lethal Weapon” DVD, starring Mel Gibson..
This is a boxed DVD set, which I must admit had been sitting unwatched and ignored in the cupboard for some time. I believe the set was a Christmas Gift to my other half a few years ago, which we never got around to watching, probably because we already owned a couple of the movies as single dvds!
The set consist of three popular Mel Gibson movies, on three individual discs. They comprise of 'We Were Soldiers', 'Mad Max' and 'Lethal Weapon'. The box is really rather uninteresting, just three pictures of Gibson in each of the movies on the front and a small amount of information about each film on the reverse, along with information about directors and classification.
I will attempt to give a brief synopsis of the films without spoiling the story lines for future viewers.
We Were Soldiers
We Were Soldiers is an Action/War drama set in Vietnam. The movie runs for 133 minutes and was first released in 2001 by Paramount Pictures. We Were Soldiers carries an age 15 certificate.
The film is based on a true story, the account of the battle of La Drong Valley at the opening of the Vietnam War. The plot follows Lt. Colonel Hal Moore, played by Gibson, as he trains and initiates his platoon, then ventures into battle. In a small clearing four hundred young soldiers were surrounded by two thousand North Vietnamese soldiers. The battle that followed was one of the fiercest imaginable.
Mad Max
Mad Max is a Sci/fi Action movie, with a runtime of 88 minutes, released on DVD June 2006 by Warner Home Video. First released to the cinema in 1979. Classification 18.
Set in an unspecified, post-apocalyptic future, Mel Gibson plays Max Kotanski, a 'Bronze', a futuristic law enforcement officer. When a group of outlaw bikers target Max and his family, he takes revenge on the gang with dramatic consequences. This movie contains violence and gory scenes. (I have posted a more detailed review of this movie under Review 5863677, although that is of the single DVD not the boxed set). Mad Max is now a 30 year old film, but has stood the test of time.
Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon is an Action movie, with an age 18 classification. The run time is 105 minutes and the film was first release din 1987 by Warner Bros.
In this movie Mel Gibson is teamed with Danny glover, the pair play Vietnam war veterans turned cops. Both hate working with a partner, but are teamed up in order to solve a murder which leads to a war with an international heroin ring. A fast moving, action packed, often funny movie which was the first of the four Lethal Weapon movies.
Other information
Only We Were Soldiers has any special features, these include a documentary of the Battle of La Drong Valley, deleted scenes, TV and Radio spot and a theatrical trailer. Not really worth watching in my opinion! All the DVDs come with subtitles and language options.
The DVD set is available from www.amazon.co.uk for around £8 new or £1.75 used.
My Thoughts and Conclusion
Although I am not a Mel Gibson fan, I surprised myself by quite enjoying these three DVDs. They are not really my cup of tea, but proved to be a good collection of action movies. I do feel that this boxed set is more for the fans of Mr Gibson and although I have given the set 4*, I would not have purchased it for myself. Would recommend to others if they enjoy action movies and Mel Gibson!
