Advantages: Truly thought provoking. Disadvantages: An old film so bad quality though it has been improved upon
Johnny Got His Gun is originally an anti-war novel published in 1939 by Dalton Trumbo, an American novelist. The novel was based on a true event where a soldier lost all his senses and all of his limbs.
The film was released in 1971 and was re-released in 2009 on DVD. The 2009 DVD also includes a documentary titled Dalton Trumbo: Rebel in Hollywood, the music video One by Metallica, cast interviews, the original trailer, a radio told version of the book from 1940 and behind the scenes commentary.
The name Johnny got his Gun was an American propaganda call for rallying young men to subscribe to the military.
Plot
A young soldier, Joe Bonham, is hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War One and subsequently loses all of his limbs and all of his senses along with the ability to speak though his mind functions perfectly ...
Advantages: Orlando, Heath..... Disadvantages: bad accents!
.
The film also shows the now infamous shoot out, with the men emerging in the ' tin' armoury. The ending is sad for the soppies out there, myself included, and Joe Byrne goes out in typical style, ever the Irish, after a drink!
I found the film to be very on the edge of your seat. I know the other reviewer didn't like it, but I found it great. Films like this really get you thinking, as if it was truly this way.
I thought Ledger did a sterling job as Ned Kelly, as did Bloom as Byrne, the only downside being their accents, but hey, us Irish have pretty unique voices! Looking at the pictures of the DVD, the characters did look quite like the real people, as were the ages correct.
I just wish I went to see it at the cinema at the time!! Now I own it on DVD, I'll be watching it all the time! ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Ned Kelly (DVD)
Advantages: great actors, good story, good effects Disadvantages: None come to mind
.
The film was mainly based on the Island of Navarone and I did think that the sets and scenery were excellent and we did get some wonderful views of the mountains and islands surrounding it. I did find that when the men were travelling to Navarone they visited some lovely places and they all looked very authentic and realistic. The effects which were used were very good and looked very real. I did not noticeable see any bad effects of dodgy added backdrops which made for better viewing in my opinion.
The music throughout the film was good but nothing spectacular or memorable. It was all good for the places which it was used and helped with the scene setting.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Directors Commentary
Featurettes
- A message from Carl Foreman
- Great Guns
- Honeymoon on Rhodes
- No ...
