Boy becomes obsessed in mother!
the plot is a bit weird and their is alternative endings just to add to the trauma of how many ways they could end this film
a film about torture, obsession, sex, incest, abuse, and love
I watched it because I was intrigued, however I was very disturbed on some scenes.. there is a lot of affection and sorrow between the mother and the son, however it is the son who is the most confused.
I have never come across a film so strange but felt there was a good message being described in the film, for a film that came highly recommended to me I was very surprised.
there is not allot of visual with the daughter of the family as she is in a few scenes with an older guy who she doesn't want to be with.
the father who dies in the film is like the stepping stone for the film, as the way he treated his wife, and the way he spied on his kids when they were growing up kind of leaves you not surprised.!!
the main guy (the boy) also finds love in the film but he still left very confused as the girl in question has done slavery and torture sex with other people by beating people almost to death, so the boy get's her to prove it... as she tortures her best friend..
The mother seems to wise up and leave the boy to get on and have a normal life because believes the obsession has gone too far
The ending is really weird!! (Didn't expect anything else)
After all that's happened in the film, the deaths, the incest, the seductions, the abuse, the torture, the sex and the slavery the mother decides to come back and and say to her son that she is ready to go all the way with him..
The film ends with a funeral and a drama its quite funny however even more disturbing then anything I saw in the film
Translating as 'My Mothers Castle', the film 'Le Chateau de MaMere', made in 1990, is the second film adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's childhood memoirs set in early 20th century France. It would be best to first watch the preceding film 'La Gloire de Mon Pere' which sets the scene and characterisations but it is not essential. In fact, if you had a choice which of the two films to watch I would recommend this one above the other. Where as 'La Gloire de Mon Pere' is a charming but plodding film the pace of 'Le Chateau de MaMere' is faster paced with a more involving plot.
~Who was Marcel Pagnol?~
For those of you not familiar (and who have not read my previous 'La Gloire de Mon Pere' review), Marcel Pagnol was a French film maker and novelist born in 1895. You may best know him as the author of 'L'eau de Collines' which was ...
Advantages: Charming family film, beautiful cinematography and music score, gentle humour. Disadvantages: Rose tinted nostalgia, no real plot, no extras, subtitles cannot be turned off!
'My Fathers Glory' (to give the English translation) is the 1990 adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's 1957 memoir of the same name detailing his childhood years. The info on the Ciao link regarding this dvd is incorrect in stating it is about Marcels friendship with a girl, that actually refers to 'le Chateau de MaMere' which is the sequel to this film, and continues where this film leaves off.
~Who was Marcel Pagnol?~
For those of you who are not familiar he was a French film maker and author of (among others) 'L'eau des Collines' which you may better know in it's 1980's film adaption form as 'Jean de Florette' and 'Manon des Souces' starring Gerard Depardieu and Yves Montand. Without going too much into the plot of these films they were about a town gentleman moving to Provence in the early part of the 20th century and his struggle ...

DVD Description
Adapted from the provocative novel by transgressive postmodern intellectual and author Georges Bataille, MA MERE is set in the visually lush and spiritually empty tourist trap of the Canary Islands. Louis Garrel, projecting the same European sultriness that was perfectly suited to Bertolucci's more warmly erotic film THE DREAMERS, plays Pierre, a sulking and antisocial teenager, willfully indifferent to being on summer vacation with his parents. When his wayward father suddenly dies, his mother Helene (Isabelle Huppert), forces him into her universe of illicit sex--a simultaneously ugly and playful realm inhabited by Gallic sophisticates engaging in orgies and bondage. Pierre, a devout Catholic, is resistant at first--to the point of Catholic guilt-induced attacks of sobbing and hyperventilation. But after fulfilling experiences with Helene's male and female playmates, Pierre obsessively pursues the sexual attention of his own mother, and a disturbing quest toward consummation of the attraction between mere and fils is undertaken. Star Isabelle Huppert's role as Helene is a perfect follow-up to her award-winning turn in the equally shocking LA PIANISTE, which featured the French fatale engaging in illicit acts with both a young male student and her own controlling, elderly mother. With her just barely constrained and visibly volatile sexual energy, the actress has become known as the "go-to girl" for roles that transcend sexual and social taboos and explore the dark and violent side of erotic desire. Her overpowering presence in MA MERE, as all great performances do, make the viewer wonder just how blurry the boundaries between actress and role have become.
