all 11 seasons of this multi-Emmy Award-winning series.Adapted for television by legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart, the series has long since supplanted Robert Altman's film in the public's consciousness. Life and death at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during theKorean War doesn't seem like ripe fodder for a comedy series, butM*A*S*Hmasterfully balanced laughter and tears (less so in its later, more preachy seasons). It often does play better without a laugh track (a viewing option for all episodes). During its run,M*A*S*Hsurvived several delicate operations, including the departure of Gelbart after season 4 and the loss of core ensemble members McLean Stevenson as Col. Henry Blake and Wayne Rogers as Trapper John (after season 3), Larry Linville as Frank Burns (after season 5) and Gary Burghoff (a veteran of the original film) as Radar (after season 8). The show thrived with the introduction of some new blood, Henry Morgan as "regular Army" Col. Potter and Mike Farrell as compassionate BJ (season 4) and David Ogden Stiers as elitist Charles Emerson Winchester III (season 6).M*A*S*Hwas honored with the prestigious Peabody Award "for the depth of its humour and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war." This was a sitcom that did not always leave you laughing, as witness the classic season 3 episode "Abyssinia, Henry." And throughout its run,M*A*S*Hbroke the sitcom mould with several episodes, including "The Interview" (season 4), in which Clete Roberts interviews the staff of the 4077th, "Point of View" (season 7), subjectively seen through the eyes of a wounded soldier and "Life Time" (season 8), which unfolds in real time.M*A*S*Hboasted one of television's greatest ensembles, fully embodied characters who each became icons, most notably Alan Alda, who served with distinction as Hawkeye, the series' soul and conscience. But a special salute to Loretta Switt, whose Margaret Houlihan went from "Hot Lips" to nobody's pushover. From the "Pilot" to the feature-length finale, "Goodbye, Farewell&Amen," still the most-watched episode in history, this essential (but not so much if you bought the individual season sets) collection honours one of television's greatest half-hours.--Donald Liebenson

The Story.....
The war is raging 3 miles from the M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), and all sorts of problems and catastrophes are going on at the good old 4077th. The unit is run by Colonel (Dr) Henry Blake (series 1 - 3) and then Colonel Sherman T Potter (series 4 -11), both commanders are vastly different, but the comic events that each of the characters portray, are about equal - both trying to run a unit under extreme conditions, whilst keeping the men and women happy, care free and most of all sane......
The two Doctors of the hour, Dr’s Benjamin Franklyn Pearce ‘Hawkeye’ and Dr John Trapper (series 1 - 3) and the replacement Dr BJ Honeycutt (series 4 - 11), are always sipping the ‘moonshine’ that they have made from their homemade still, to try and drown out the ravages of war. However, their other ‘bunkie’ Major Frank Burns (series 1 - 5) and his replacement Major Charles Winchester the 3rd (series 5 - 11) share the tent, and try there very best to spoil Hawkeyes fun and games. From Burns trying to be more ‘Gung Ho’ whilst seeing Major Houlihan on the side, to Major Winchester, transferred to the unit, as a result of upsetting his C.O in Tokyo, and trying his best to get back again.... Both different characters but both having the same goal, annoying everyone they can..... Major Houilhan (Hot lips) goes throughout the series and ends up having an affair with Major Burns and then being married to another man to getting divorced all within the 11 series....
The series is full of laughs and jokes and on the early seasons the audience laughter is included with the sound track, but whilst at the same time showing you the strains and stresses of a normal Army mobile hospital, and how each character deals with it. Hawkeye being the example. He goes through bad patches throughout the seasons, which eventually gives him a mental breakdown and being placed in a psychiatric unit at the start of the last episode. (see below) Corporal Klinger the units only screwball soldier, tries dressing up in women's clothing to get a section 8 (discharge through mental health reasons), but to everyone's surprise in the last series, he stays in Korea, after trying for so many years to get out of the Army and go home.
The final episode ' Goodbye, Farewell And Amen' is about 2 hours long and shows that the most sturdy of them 'Hawkeye' can crack under the strain of the war. The program starts with Hawkeye being in an Army hospital away from the war after an apparent Mental Breakdown, and finishes with gang finally going home after the ceasefire is called. This episode was enjoyed by thousands on the night it was aired and was said to be the most enjoyable episode the cast made. Throughout the episode you see the changes in the last days of the war, from war hardened, trained medical staff to emotional, caring human beings just wanting to go home and ‘sleep’.
Conclusion
Although the price is high, the series is excellent and a laugh a minute. Hours and hours of good clean comedy and excellent stories set this TV sitcom above the rest. The box set is original in design and in keeping with the program including an episode guide and bonus discs and of cause the usual sort of extras that usually comes with a box set (deleted scenes, cast interviews etc).
A first for television in many ways, M.A.S.H. helped invent the dramedy format, seasoning its comedy with character development and serious issues of war, peace, and human relationships. Based on Robert Altman's 1970 movie of the same name, the show featured an ensemble cast set in a remote mobile Army surgical hospital near Seoul, during the Korean War.

DVD Description
A first for television in many ways, M.A.S.H. helped invent the dramedy format, seasoning its comedy with character development and serious issues of war, peace, and human relationships. Based on Robert Altman's 1970 movie of the same name, the show featured an ensemble cast set in a remote mobile Army surgical hospital near Seoul, during the Korean War. The cast was led by Dr. Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce (Alan Alda) and Dr. 'Trapper' John McIntyre (Wayne Rogers), free-spirited doctors whose humour and pranks helped them face the horrors of war, but also got them into trouble with their more military-minded superiors. Funny, touching, and honest, the series ran from 1972-1983, during which time it became one of the most popular shows in television history. Contains all the episodes from the first series to the eleventh series.
