Since my slightly earlier youth (I’m not old yet), I had frequently heard of Beavis and Butthead, and consequently they had been elevated to god-like status among such cartoon heroes as Ren and Stimpy, the Simpsons, and Garfield. Well, maybe Garfield achieved a league of his own.
Anyway, I had seen only frustratingly bite-sized clips until last weekend when I finally remembered to ask a friend if I could borrow the video “Beavis and Butthead Do America”.
Success!
Or… not. The beginning of the movie (after the FABULOUS theme by Red Hot Chili Peppers – the soundtrack rocks!) was disappointingly empty. My preconceptions had guided me towards an expectation of action and hilarity. Nope. Nothing could have prepared me for their voices. Or their constant growly-grunting sniggering noises. Or the amount of initial silence.
However, my opinion did improve. After 5 or 10 minutes of the film, I was less critical, and a day or two later I was cackling about it with those of my friends who were educated (!) enough to have seen it. You get used to the voices, and even to the weird noises after a while. They do have a purpose – only a dumb teenager could make noises like that. You have to get into the mood of the film. Without giving too much away, the quest for a TV (a seemingly crucial quest to the brain-dead Beavis) is replaced by the aim of “doing” an extremely hot (female) criminal.
It does become a barrel of laughs. Don’t expect too much and you’ll get a pleasant surprise. Being a cartoon, the film is not hindered by special effects, the result being magic mushrooms, a huge car pile-up and a flashback to little-Beavis-and-Butthead. The animation is crummy but that’s half the idea and does not spoil the comedy. The film has some really funny bits – more the situations than the lines, although there are some class one-liners: (when jacking up the boot of a car from the inside): “hey Beavis, I’m jacking off!” – smutty laughter and, when they are asked to “do” a guy: “Well, you could close your eyes and pretend it was-” is smacked around the head by Butthead.
Highlights of the film include a granny slut, wondering if a full-cavity search qualifies as sex, and Beavis on caffeine (or Bumholio).
The bloke who does the voices of both Beavis and Butthead is very talented: the voices are strange and different from each other. Also, Beavis on caffeine must have been quite a challenge, but he was brilliant!
Jokes start to come more thick and fast towards the end of the film and I went from cynic to fan. A classic, if you ask me. Irony in targeting the audience about whom it complains – stupid teenagers love to watch about the stupidity of other teenagers (e.g. “Kevin and Perry”). I think I qualify as a stupid teenager. It also appeals to those who used to be stupid teenagers but are now too old to be called teenagers. A film worth watching, and worth watching twice, if you’re into that kind of (very silly) thing.
