King is a master craftsman of the saxophone and one of the British players who has made an ... more
impact on the international scene. This extraordinary album shows why. Like so many players his first influence was Charlie Parker, but these days he is very much his own man. He solos always with power and authority, and never better than he does on this album. He is imaginative and original, and one of the most moving tracks in this set is "Tristan's Song", played on soprano and King's attempt to capture the poignancy of Wagner's masterpiece. The use of a string quartet on this and another composition of his, "Lust", evokes memories of Stan Getz's "Focus" collaboration with Eddie Sauter. The alto on "Lust" sails through the strings very much as Getz did on "Night Rider". Apart from the broiling saxophone inventions, pianists Steve Hamilton and Gordon Beck are outstanding and Gerard Presencer's trumpet makes a good foil for King in the tracks on which he appears. The two horns make a satisfyingly mellow voice in ensemble but appropriately it is the leaping, tumbling saxophone solos that rivet one's attention. --Steve Voce

Advantages: Well written dialogue Disadvantages: Too slow paced for my liking
The comments on the back cover of Richard Price's "LushLife" praises him for writing dialogue better than anyone. The last author I recall seeing praised in this way was Elmore Leonard, who I am a huge fan of. Leonard's writing lends itself to being translated into film very well and I notice that Richard Price's previous writing credits do include film and TV. I had all expectations of a decent read ahead of me.
After a night out, Eric Cash and Ike Marcus are walking home supporting a friend who has had too much to drink when they are approached by a couple of men with a gun. Eric hands over his wallet, but Ike tries to resist and ends up being shot; his last words to the muggers are "Not tonight, my man". This is what Eric says, anyway, but a couple of eye witnesses say something different, making him the prime suspect ...
Advantages: Worth it JUST for Last Night & Olympia! Disadvantages: Some idiot told them to try & appeal to the Britpop market
better with age.
7 - Ciao.
Lush meets The Eurovision Song Contest with the intro of this anti love song, Miki sings with Jarvis Cocker of Pulp & a nice acoustic guitar line backed with a mixed down electric guitar backing up with understated drums. Basically this is Lush's answer to songs like "Fairy Tale Of New York" but its rather fabulous if I'm honest, a right little rocking poppy tune with Cocker adding extra clout to show how well Lush were respected at the time.
8 - Tralala.
A nice breathy intro with a solo guitar jangling for all its worth being e-bowed to within an inch of its life even in the subdued mode that is the way this starts, its typically old school Lush singing about love & Mr Right. Its quite down tempo but a rather haunting melody & vocal reminding me of "High & Dry" by Radiohead to be honest.
It's rather like ...

Advantages: All natural products, no animal testing, many vegan products, the smells and soooo much choice! Disadvantages: the price- a tad expensive.
Lush to me is now a sort of hobby! It was just a little something I stumbled along when out shopping with my friends in Cheltenham- I don’t know how I managed before without it! —No I don’t want this to turn into some wonder story so I’ll start with the bad points first:
Sadly it’s a tad expensive; I can easily spend £20 without realising this—and its £20 I haven’t got! The trick is to organise your shopping trips around your bath times! – if you wash often visit more and if you wash less visit less- it avoids products being stacked up and losing there freshness—sometimes this causes them to discolour or crumble and nobody wants this.
I’m not sure if this is a good or bad point: there’s too much choice! You just want more and more! - I can’t decide what to ...
