Advantages: Excellent Cast Disadvantages: None that I can think of
...My younger brother and his girlfriend have recently started hiring videos every night. Due to the fact that they both work and are not able to take them back the next day, yours truly has landed that job. Some of the videos they rent are not my cup of tea in the slightest, but a few of them have taken my fancy and have turned out to be rather good.
Last night my brother handed me ‘LuckyBreak’ and informed me I would like it. I’d actually heard of the film before, as a friend of mine is a huge James Nesbitt fan and the Cold Feet actor stars in it, so she recommended it to me. Other than the fact that he was in it, I knew nothing else about the film, but decided to watch it anyway. Open slotting it in my VCR, I realised it was a Film Four Production. I have enjoyed a number of Film Four movies, so things were looking good...

Advantages: Likeable characters, light-hearted (ish) fun, good moments. Disadvantages: Very slight, not enough good moments, too similar to The Full Monty
...on a show. The audition and rehearsal scenes are not quite on a par with The Full Monty's, though stand up well on their own (mainly due to Nesbitt not being able to 'do the accent' and singing in a thick Irish brogue), but there aren't many big laughs to be had. There is also quite a bizarre sub plot holding the movie together, concerning an inmate's obsession with tomatoes...
The soundtrack seems like out-takes from the Full Monty's - all "comical" brass, whilst the musical's numbers are a lot more 'real' and very funny (Note - Apparently the musical was written by an uncredited Stephen Fry, which wold explain why they're the best thing in the movie!).
The film has all the prison break cliches firmly in place, including references to The Great Escape, smuggling (you'll never look at a pigeon the same way), wardens being fooled easily...

Advantages: Good cast, excellent characterisation, perfect casting, James Nesbitt's sexy accent! Disadvantages: a bit short
...Faced with a few child-free hours on Bank Holiday Monday, we decided to go to the cinema. Arriving a few minutes late for Planet of the Apes, we had a look at the alternative films showing – one of which was LuckyBreak.
I had never heard of it, but my other half had, explaining it was a British film directed by Peter Cattaneo (of The Full Monty fame) and starred Cold Feet’s James Nesbitt. It sounded good, so we paid our money and went in. We weren’t disappointed.
It is what I would call a gentle comedy. You won’t be rolling round the aisles in uncontrollable laughter, but you will chuckle, audibly. The thing which I most enjoyed about the film was the characters, all of whom seemed well-rounded, convincingly acted, engaging and interesting.
The film begins with two friends – Jimmy (James Nesbitt...

Professional reviews
Review: A genuinely touching, rip-roaring romantic romp. (Empire, 29/04/2008)
...Amiably engaging....Nesbitt makes a fine leading man....Lightly reflective and consistently entertaining... (Los Angeles Times, 15/04/2008)
Advantages: Chick Flick Disadvantages: Very predictable
...A very predictable film once you get the gist of it. Happy go lucky Lindsay Lohan kisses down on his luck Chris Pine at a Masquerade Ball oraganised by Lindsay's character Ashley and "hilarity" ensues as their luck is magically switched......somehow.
Overall quite slow and predictable with slightly limp acting mainly down to a poor story line. Although maybe worth a look for Lohan fans and a girls night in, but otherwise stay clear. McFly play a struggling English band trying to break through in America and obviouly they should stick to their music as the film turns into a giant plug for McFly with nothing in the film to really get your teeth into. Nothing compared to Lohan's earlier films such as Freaky Friday or Parent trap which are much more enjoyable....

Advantages: Pretty actors, nice songs, nice scenery Disadvantages: Mithun Chakraborty was not good!
...looking Russian guy in a caravan offers to help her. He hardly speaks English, she doesn't speak Russian, he tries to assault her and she runs away after belting him across the forehead. He stumbles across a car and tries to break in only to be confronted by the car owner, our hero himself, Aditya (Salman Khan). A fight ensues, our hero emerges victorious and he drives off, unaware that he has a stowaway in the back seat. He reaches a checkpoint when all cars are being searched and produces his passport. The guard then finds Lucky in the back of the car and demands some id. Aditya, I'll call him Adi for short now, is stunned and annoyed and demands to know what she's doing there. Suddenly a terrorist attack takes place and all hell breaks loose. Adi drives off and basically the rest of the film involves the two leads trying not to get caught...
