Advantages: Great fun for all the family, almost Disadvantages: Could have made more of the same
I never really watched friends when it first came out in '94 as after watching the pilot episode I was not impressed at all. But years later I am the owner of the entire 10 series and I watch them regularly.
There are a few things that are questionable, like why did the writers change Joey Tribiannies character from a two-bit actor into a bit of a stupid two-bit actor? In the pilot episode he came across as a bit of a charmer with a brain, then in the next episode they changed his character into a forgetful more comical guy who had a way with the ladies.
Then there was the door numbers in the pilot, suddenly changing over the next few episodes????
There were a few more 'sudden' changes to the scenery and the apartments but not enough to notice unless, like myself, you have watched them several times over.
Anyway, the combination ...
Advantages: Well characterised and acted, good family entertainment, plus lots of interesting detail and lovely scenery. Disadvantages: It is tempting to watch them all in one sitting.
We first watched Lovejoy on the television in early 1986. We had just moved into a rather-more-dilapidated-than-we-had-realised, 18th century farmhouse in rural west Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District, it was bitterly cold, the Rayburn fell to pieces, all the pipes froze and watching Lovejoy (wrapped in duvets in an attempt to keep warm) was just about the only bright spot in our week. Life gradually got easier, but we were hooked and didn't miss a single episode in the years that followed. It remained one of those series that you think, "I wish that would be repeated" and so when I saw Lovejoy DVDs listed in a catalogue I receive from time to time, I just had to start collecting them and the obvious place to start was at the beginning.
Episode One, "The Firefly Cage" sets the scene well, introduces you to Lovejoy's life ...
Advantages: One of the greatest tv shows ever created, gripping, briliantly written, can't get much better. Disadvantages: There honestly is nothing or very little wrong with this show/season.
No matter how many adjectives you pile upon this show, there simply aren't enough words to describe the incredible talents of everyone involved in creating a show that should be the bench mark for fellow TV shows and aspiring writers or directors for the future. These may be bold and strong words but Six Feet Under putting it simply, is one of, if not the best TV Show ever created.
This is the fifth and final series of HBO's dark and disturbing drama set in a funeral home and is quite possibly the best of the lot. Season five ties up all the lose ends in what has been an emotional roller coaster for not only the characters but for the viewers too, keeping us both glued to the screen and dreading the end which inevitably is heading our way.
The quality of this, and all the seasons for that matter, shines through when you realise that ...
