Main Cast: ---------------- Amy Smart – Jessica Donovan (teacher) Tom Malloy – Jake Mitchell (dance teacher) Nicola Royston – Corinne Kennedy Billy Zane – Kent Krandel
Plot: ------- The film starts with a few plots dated back in 2002 when Jake and Corinne are dancing together. They are engaged and win the West Coast Swing competition. Jake feels that they won the competition just because of sympathy vote. When he was a teenager he had an ear infection and in completely deaf. He learned to feel the beat of the music. He has a device in his ears to hear sounds but when he dances he turns it down. He learned to read people’s mouth so it is very difficult to observe that he is disabled.
He is invited to a school to make a presentation on disability. The children are surprised and amazed. He asked Corinne to come to present a dance to the children. In the meantime they broke up and Jake became a dance teacher while Corinne a judge at dance competitions.
Jessica is amazed of their dance as well. She talks to Jake and agree that Jessica and her fiancé Kent will go to learn a dance for their wedding. Kent is talking a lot on his mobile when they go to the dance class. When they arrive and pay the fee Kent tells Jessica that he has to go back to the office. Jessica stays and really enjoys dancing. She is talented. Kent tries to skip each dancing class. Jessica practices dance steps on the street, at the school’s toilet. She is getting more and more pretty and beautiful. In the beginning of the film she was a boring teacher with strict appearance and as she started dancing she doesn’t wear her strict-looking glasses, she wears more feminine clothes. She is really beautiful. Jake asks her to dance with him on the competition. Will Jessica accept it? Can Kent support his fiancée? What does Corinne say when Jake refuses dancing with her?
My opinion ----------------- While I was watching this film I was wondering whether these people are dancers who act or are actors who learned to dance. As I haven’t seen them before I had to check it. Well Amy Smart played in Butterfly Effect and Just friends. She is an American actress. Tom Malloy wrote screenplays The Alphabet Killer and The Attic and acted in Gravesend and Law and Order. So they are actors and not dancers.
I’m not a professional dancer I just love watching it. There were several great performances presented in this film. In my opinion the story of the film was great. The actors’ performance was good. I loved how they danced. The chemistry between Jake and Jessica worked very well, they danced in harmony. I loved how they practiced.
What makes this film only a four star film is the lack of depth of characters. They are not presented well enough. I haven’t seen these actors before so I can’t tell how this performance compares to their previous ones. They were good and authentic but they weren’t brilliant. I try to compare them to Antonio Banderas teaching ballroom dance to student, well he was brilliant. The dances presented in the film were good some of them really outstanding.
The soundtrack of the film was fitting well the plot and was really varied. I loved the songs they danced. You can see the difference when Jake dances with the device in his ears turned on. He can hear the song not only the beat of the music.
To sum up it was a good dancing film but the characters weren’t presented in depth so the actors’ performance was simply good, nothing outstanding. I recommend you watching it when it’s on TV.
