LOVE IT TO DEATH

(guitar); Dennis Dunaway (bass instrument); Neal Smith (drums).Recording information: RCA Recording Studios, New York, New York.Whereas Alice Cooper's first two studio albums, 1969's PRETTIES FOR YOU and 1970's EASY ACTION, tended more towards the trippy excesses of the hippie era, their next one, 1971's LOVE IT TO DEATH introduced the world to the heavy sound that Cooper would soon be taking to the top. With the invaluable production assistance of future Pink Floyd/Lou Reed cohort Bob Ezrin, LOVE IT TO DEATH proved Alice Cooper's first truly great album, and served as their commercial breakthrough. That staple of teen alienation, I'm Eighteen, is the most iconic cut, but every single track on LOVE IT TO DEATH is outstanding. Plenty of other Cooper favorites are included--the candid Is It My Body, the grim theatrics of Ballad of Dwight Fry (a slightly misspelled homage to the horror-film actor), the powerful opener Caught In A Dream, and the tuneful afterglow of the closer Sun Arise. With pretentious prog-rock and folk-rock ruling the charts in the early '70s, LOVE IT TO DEATH served as a wake-up call to thousands of disenfranchised teens, and became a kind of blueprint for punk and edgy hard rock later in the decade.[Reviews]Rolling Stone (4/15/71, p.42) - ...from the first note it was right: Alice Cooper bringing it all back home again. God it's beautiful...Kerrang (Magazine) (p.69) - Adding a pre-punk sneer to proceedings, LOVE IT TO DEATH is chock-full of genuine classics...n

Advantages: Very funny, beautiful photography Disadvantages: A bit pretentious for some
Love and Death sees Woody Allen's very contemporary persona placed in Russia in 1812. Allen plays Boris, a coward (told that he has a yellow streak down his back, Boris disagrees and says it runs across his back!) who spends most of his life day dreaming about his beautiful cousin Sonia (Diane Keaton). Inspired by Tolstoy's War and Peace, the clash between Woody's wisecracking nebbish persona and the period setting is very funny.
Boris somehow ends ... ...opening sequence of Love and Death starts at this point before we go back to find out how Boris ended up there. "How I got into this predicament I'll never know," says Boris mournfully. "Absolutely incredible." The sweep of the opening scenes (rolling clouds) show very clearly that Allen has moved on from the technical rawness of his earlier films. Love and Death really does feel like a proper film and not a throwaway comedy. A moment which illustrates ...

...then you might fall in love with it. If you just don't 'get' Woody, then this might not be the one for you. Personally, I feel this is the most underrated and overlooked of all his comedies, and whilst it might not have the romantic charge of his middle period, it's frequently hilarious.
DVD Bonus Comments: Like most Woody Allen DVD's, this is more or less a vanilla disc, with little more than a theatrical trailer as a 'special feature'. It's unlikely ...

DVD Description
LOVE AND DEATH is Woody Allen's send-up of Russian literature and tongue-in-cheek homage to foreign art films (specifically, THE SEVENTH SEAL). Set in Czarist Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, the story recounts the misadventures of Boris (Allen) and his sexy cousin Sonja (Diane Keaton), culminating in their harebrained attempt to assassinate Napoleon. Through it all, Boris--Allen's usual neurotic nebbish--desperately tries to put the moves on Sonja, who's too busy spouting philosophy to notice.
