Love Actually has now become one of my favourite British Movies of all time and in my opinion can be classed as a British Classic alongside such favourites as Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral. It was released in 2003 and directed by Richard Curtis.
The great part about the film in my opinion is the way in which the stories and the characters all weave and are linked in very creative ways to show how the personal lives of others can affect your own life.
The film also incorporates my favourite time of year, Christmas! It follows the great British Christmas traditions of deciding who is going to have the Christmas number one, the school nativity play and each others relationships as Christmas approaches. This is a must see film for me every holiday season now.
The film has a great cast of British actors.
High Grant plays a very convincing Prime Minister who falls in love with a very common Martine McCutcheon (from Eastenders and now Echo Beach Fame)
His sister is played by Emma Thompson, a middle age, rather downtrodden housewife who finds out in a very upsetting way that her husband has feelings for another, younger women.
She is good friends with Daniel (played by Liam Neeson) who has just lost his wife and is struggling to bring up his stepson, himself going through those difficult times of first love and loss.
The film also features Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, Billy Bob Thornton, Claudia Schiffer and Denise Richards.
In my opinion all the characters in this film bring something different and unique. It is quite poignant at times and will bring a few tears but there are also a lot of laughs.
The sound track is great. The film focuses on Billy Mack's (Bill Nighy) attempts at taking the song "Love is all Around us," to number one, however because it is at Christmas time it is renamed, "Christmas is all around us". This song was actually featured in Richard Curtis's breakthrough film, Four Wedding and a Funeral. Other artists to feature in the film are Girls Aloud, Dido, SugarBabes, Texas to name but a few.
Bonus features on the DVD include feature commentary with some of the actors, deleted scenes (hilarious and well worth a watch), the music of Love Actually and a music video of Kelly Clarkson. It is actually rated R for sexuality, nudity and language, however I think you would be ok letting teenagers watch this movie as in my opinion it is quite tame. The DVD runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes.
