I should state early on that I am a big fan of Horror (especially religious/psychological horror) and I’m also a huge fan of Winona Ryder. Although I will try to be objective, a small amount of bias is bound to creep in…sorry!
Winona Ryder plays a woman who was once possessed by a demon who had to be exorcised. After several years have passed she finds herself helping to exorcise a guy who also claims to be possessed. At this exorcism it becomes clear that the Devil is planning to be reborn soon in the body of a man, Ben Chaplin. Winona then has to convince him of this and help him before it is too late, problem is, Chaplin is an atheist…
OK so this isn’t exactly as good as the Exorcist but it ain't bad either. It is by far the best horror film to be released this year (so far and that’s excluding The Hole as horror). Winona doesn’t exactly push herself to great new heights but she is still good, as is Chaplin who has easily escapes his ‘Matthew’ character from ‘Game On’ now what with The Truth About Cats and Dogs and The Thin Red Line and this under his belt.
The film doesn’t really show us anything new but there are a few surprises here and there which lift it above would could have been a bad exorcist rehash.
The film is quite dark (as you may expect) and you are left feeling somewhat conflicted towards the whole good vs evil thing, at least I was.
Me and my cinema buddy always end up waxing religious after seeing such films, and this is no exception so it must have had some effect. Incidentally, my mate is Christian and I am an atheist yet we both enjoyed it.
If you enjoyed Stigmata you’ll enjoy this too…if you hated Stigmata (and I know a lot of people do [I do not]) then stay away as this obviously isn’t for you.
The effects are good although gratuitous use of CGI in one scene did annoy me as it wasn’t really necessary.
Overall, a good religious horror that is above average but nothing superb, and to be honest not all that scary…more though provoking.
Onto the DVD….
The disc comes with a commentary from the director and the cinematographer…it’s quite good but one of them does have an annoying accent that grates after a while. A few deleted scenes are in there too, these are OK, nothing special. The trailer, a music video and the obligatory filmographies are also present.
Not bad, but not great either.
Film 3.5 out of 5
Disc 3 out of 5
