Filmed in Hawaii, the basic premise of the show is that a group of people are onboard a plane to Australia when it crashes on an island. That alone is interesting to me; I love all things survival and desert island, so I was immediately intrigued. But don't make the mistake of thinking this is Ray Mears or Robinson Crusoe all over again - it's far from that.
As you would in real life, the survivors begin trying to piece things together on the island, and at first all seems normal - that is until a Polar Bear runs out of the jungle. And there it begins: the wild psychotic trip that is Lost. You see, the island isn't any old island. First off there's the polar bear, then there's a smoke plume monster type creature, and on and on goes the list. I can guarantee you will have never, ever, come across a similar story to this show!
There are two annoying things about Lost:
1) Each episode contains a main storyline on the island, and then a flashback to the past of one of the characters, which reveals something about them. This is most frustrating; just as an episode is heating up, it flashes back for half an hour to some random moment in someone's life. It's all connected, and important in some vague way, but it slows the pace down dramatically, and it takes a lot of episodes of viewing for the story to progress.
2) The riddles, puzzles and unanswered questions. For example, it takes literally a couple of years before we get a definitive reason for the polar bear, and after 4 years we still don't know what the smoke monster is, so you won’t be finding the answers to these riddles in this box-set. Almost every episode has some weird goings on like these, but there are very rarely any answers. It's like taking one step forward and a hundred back.
If you put the two things above together, you're left with a slow paced show that is full of frustrations and unanswered questions, but I kid you not: it's addictive. I implore you to try it for yourself; it's like a drug. You just keep coming back, hoping to find the answers to your ever growing list of questions. In actual fact, season one answers pretty much none of them, but it's still fantastic.
The characters are a little typecast but become very real after a while, and the acting is strong in most parts. The storyline is original to the point where you just do not know what is going to happen and that, perhaps, is what gives the show its cult status.
This DVD set contains all 25 episodes from season 1, plus some interesting extras:
• Departure o The Genesis Of Lost o Before They Were Lost o Welcome To Oahu: The Making Of The Pilot o The Art Of Matthew Fox o Lost @ Comicon • Tales From The Island o Lost: On Location • Lost Revealed o The Lost Flashback (2 New scenes from the final episode) o Deleted Scenes o Bloopers From The Set o Live From The Museum Of Television And Radio o 2 Easter Eggs
Obviously a lot of those will only appeal to Lost nerds as it were, but the early ones are pretty interesting all round.
When this box-set came out it cost a fortune, but to pick it up now for less than £25 is a true bargain: do it!
