Yes it's back; I no longer leave the house on a Tuesday evening anymore why, because of channels 4's amazingly addictive series 'Lost'! It is one of those programmes that you have to watch religiously otherwise you might miss something, for those of you who missed the first series fear not because the entire series is now available on DVD.
This review is not going to go into major depth about the characters and the story line as I feel it would spoil it for the viewer.
What's it all about:
A plane full of passengers from flying from Sydney to Los Angeles crashes on to an island in the South Pacific, there are around 40 survivors from the crash and together they have to survive on the island. Episode by episode the viewers are introduced to around 10 of the main characters, we hear parts of their stories and witness flash backs to their past before the crash. Not everyone who is who they seem, and paranoia kicks in when it is discovered that there was a fugitive on the plane, but who was it? But it is not just other people the survivors need to worry about, the island itself is not what you or I would call normal, weird sounds can be heard, and even weirder things are seen. Every week we are given a hint or a clue but it is not easy to piece it all together to get the answers.
Characters, a brief description with out giving too much away:
Jack Shepherd: luckily for everyone on the flight Jack was on board, we all know the phrase "Is there a Doctor in the house" and in this case their certainly
is and I mighty hunky one at that! The gorgeous Matthew Fax, who I remember from The Party of Five, plays Jack. Jack is essential to everyone's survival on the island but will he stay out of harms way?
Kate Austin: Out of all the characters Kate is the most unpredictable amongst them, she is cagey about her past, but keen to get involved and help everyone. The question on everyone's lips is who does she fancy Jack or Sawyer? In real life actress Evangeline Lily is dating Dominic Monaghan who plays Charlie.
Charlie Pace: Is played by English actor Dominic Monaghan. Charlie was a one hit wonder before the crash, his band had a success but he became involved with drugs and it all started to fall apart. Will he be able to cope on the island with out his daily hit?
Sayid Jarrah: After the crash Sawyer accuses Sayid of being a terrorist, but he is able to convince everyone of his innocence by trying to get help. It turns Sayid will be a very helpful person to have on island as he is very technical. Sayid is played by Naveen Andrews.
James Sawyer Ford (Known as Sawyer): Sawyer is a bad boy through and through and from the start he has made it clear that he is out to save himself and no-one else. Will Kate be able to bring out a softer side in Sawyer? The handsome Josh Holloway plays sawyer. Michael Dawn & Walt Lloyd: Michael was on the flight with his son Walt and Dog Vincent when the crash happened, fortunately they were all ok. Michael and Walt have a lot more to over come than just the crash, this is a testing time for them and it will make or break their father son relationship. Harold Perrineau plays Michael and the young Malcolm David Kelly plays Walt.
John Locke: John is a very complex man, he has had a strange past and it is very hard to work him out. The other survivors are cautious of him and at times find his behaviour a little strange. Terry O Quinn plays the strange and mysteries john.
Shannon Rutherford and Boone Carlyle: Brother and sister Shannon and Boone have a rocky relationship, this is shown more clearly through flashbacks. Shannon played by Maggie Grace, is used to finer things in life so she struggles to cope with island life. Brother Boone played by Ian Somerhalder gets stuck right in to surviving on the island and becomes friendly with John Locke; together they start hunting the island for some answers.
Hugo Hurley Reyes: Jorge Garcia plays the lovable Hurley; despite the fact that the plane he was on has just crashed Hurley appears very clam indeed, as the weeks go on we learn that Hurley wants to try and help others on their quest for survival. He seems to be a very lucky person indeed but will his luck run out?
Jin-Soo Kwon and Sun-Soo Kwon: Jin and Sun are a Korean couple who have found them selves stuck on an island unable to communicate with any one due to their language barrier. Even though the other survivors on the island cannot understand what they are saying it is obvious to every one that the couples relationship is a strained one. Daniel Dae Kim plays Jin and Yun-Jin Kim plays Sun.
Claire Littleton: Claire is a heavily pregnant Australian girl; stuck on the island everyone's worries are for Claries unborn child, Charlie and Claire become friendly and he sets out to make sure that Claire is kept safe. Will Claire be able to have the baby safely? Emillie De Ravin plays the character of Claire
Who created it?
Lost has been created by Damon Lindel, Jeffery Lieber and JJ Adams. Damon Lindel created the overall storyline and was responsible for the first two episodes of Lost; he has now taken over the show as JJ Adams has other commitments including his most recent conquest writing Mission Impossible 3.
Lost has won a Golden Globe and has been nominated for 44 more awards and won 28 of them.
My thoughts:
Even though I find the end of each episode frustrating because I am left hanging for an answer I still tune in to watch every week. This series is anything but predictable which makes gripping viewing. I really enjoy the flash backs as it gives you a insight into the characters lives before the crash, they all behave and acted totally different and it is interesting to see what roles have been allocated to who i.e. leader, builder, protector. It is also intriguing to watch the relationships between the characters, who dislikes who, who likes who, will their be romance on the island? I also like the fact that the characters are all so different, no one is a stereotype, people have been as roles that are not obvious this helps to keep the viewer entertained. The actors are brilliant and of an extremely high standard and it is that combined with the outstanding special effects and scenery that make Lost unique.
