Sofia Coppola's second feature-length film focuses on two guests at a Tokyo hotel--Bob (Bill Murray), a middle-aged actor in town to film whiskey commercials, and Charlotte...
more...(Scarlett Johansson), the young wife of a trendy photographer (Giovanni Ribisi) who is always out on a shoot. When Bob isn't on the job taking fragmented direction from the Japanese crew, he's receiving faxes on home decorating from his emotionally distant wife. And while her husband is away, Charlotte spends most of her time trying to motivate herself to do more than look out the window at Tokyo's urban sprawl. So when the two meet in the hotel bar, they strike up an unusual friendship, one that provides a welcome escape from their boredom and loneliness.
With LOST IN TRANSLATION, Coppola cements her reputation as a thoughtful and inventive filmmaker. Every element of the movie is pitch-perfect, from the dreamy, atmospheric score to the expertly timed editing to the lingering shots of the characters and the city. Most importantly, Coppola's minimalist script allows Murray and Johansson to give astonishingly moving yet subtle performances as people who are lost in the limbo of a foreign country, but find each other for comfort and companionship. Both heartbreakingly sad and hilariously funny, Coppola's LOST IN TRANSLATION is that rare movie in which everything is in its right place.

I didn't hear much about this film when it was first released, and so I didn't go to see it at the cinema. The occasional reviews I did hear were generally bad ones; people didn't get it or thought it was a pointless film. I saw it being advertised on Film4 and it seemed quite interesting so I decided to see for myself because I do, more often than not, love every film I see haha.

The film starts of with a shot of the main character, Bob Harris [Bill Murray] in a taxi on the way to his hotel in Tokyo. He is on a trip there to do some advertising in an attempt to keep the work coming in, as his is a slowly fading actor. Also staying in the same hotel is Charlotte [Scarlett Johansson] a young woman who has just graduated from Yale with a degree in Philosophy. She has recently married her husband, Jon [Giovanni Ribisi] a photographer, who's in Tokyo for business. The film begins by setting the scene and illustrating the loneliness Bob and Charlotte both feel. They both feel trapped in their marriages and lives and throughout the film they slowly become closer. But do they eventually get together or not? I'll leave you to find that out! 

This film was very enjoyable to watch, and is definitely in my top 5! However, saying that, I can see why people wouldn't find it so great. There is something different about this film and it has some very unique and interesting features. Sofia Coppola is a fantastic director and really makes this film what it is, amazing. She adds a stylish look to the film, and makes it very creative, yet real. That is one of the factors that I think makes people not like this film, it is extremely realistic, it isn't fancy or dressed up at all, it is what it is. The story is believable and the relationship between Bob and Charlotte is honest and you can see that both Murray and Johansson have chemistry on screen, they both fit these roles perfectly and their acting is outstanding. You should defiantly give this film a shot if you like Murray or Johansson or have seen and enjoyed Sofia Coppola's other films. It's entertaining, romantic, unique and extremely funny.

Watch it!
