Guys I hope that this translation is right, I might be wrong. When I first bought my DVD, I was excited especially the cost was down from its normal value of around 20£. The excitement was a product of good insight of well known people and institution. I said to myself then is why not try it. So I had my first copy. Generally I found the movie in the level of satisfactory to very satisfactory. You might be wondering how on earth did I come to that rating. Here is how I objectively translated the movie.
Characters: Scarlett's role was outstanding. Well do not get me wrong I was not after the scene where she was on her knickers. Her performance was outstanding. I think she related well to the character that it was an effortless way of depicting the character. She played a young and as I look at it carefree attitude kind and a bored woman. You could find in her character a sense of intellectual piece. Let us put it this way somewhat modern to neo-woman. Well there are some pince of rebel attitude in hers as well. This is the best bit of the characters, Bill M playing a celebrity in his retirement years. The forgettable twilight years of a celebrity but still beloved in a country so much obsessed with celebrity. The similiraties in the characters or what we could say as a common ground is their loneliness. Bill M's character is instrumental as well to the relationship that evolved between them. Supporting roles were quite impressive I would say but most of them were japanese which really brewed the idea of being lost in translation. The partner of Scarlett in the movie had a good performance I think but he should have more impersonated the character.
The Scenery: I would say that the japanese scenery was awesome. The more I am amazed and wanting to go to Japan. How did the place make the movie great? Well, come to think of it if it was film somewhere else the effect of being "Lost" (oops not that lost okay) will not be great. The fact that japan is a micro country compared to china but the resemblance of the language and the rich ness of heritage and culture is big time. Well point being is if you were lost in China, obviously you would say --ah yeh it is a big nation, oh well i do not speak their language ....Well that is just my opinion.
Director: I think Coppola should be congratulated with her performance. I really believe that it was classy the way she handled the movie. The execution was great. The timing and cinematography was cool.
Music: Well, i Do not usually put loads of words in this section because I think that most of the films have outstanding soundtrack. Again MOST. I think the music blended well with the emotions and the shots in the movie. It gave color to the movie it self. Well the mood was romantic/drama.
Plot: I think that the first part up to 95% of the story was outstanding. The fact that Scarlett was bored and then she need some spice in her life and the character of Bill M is likewise and then things happened. I do not want to spell everything out, it is for the audience even so been watched before to chew the essence of the movie. Okay do not think that the next comment would be positive. I think conclusion is not my taste. Why? Well let us put it this way all the along every story showed that it was a make or break situation... the one that you would say let us go for broke. Well I might be so useless but I think they just went on the not so happy ending. I was expecting a me and you against the world effort. Again my opinion.
Other views, well i could not comment on the comparison between coppola's movies but I would say it is worth it. I think also that the accolades and awards that they received were justified. Scarlett's performance here could not be compared to her other movie because this one is above the rest. Bill M is aging.
Anyways who wanted a righteous ending?
Hope that I helped you.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

I've seen thousands of films in my 19 years on this planet and this easily gets into my top 10, one of my fave. films and an iconic prime example as to why a great soundtrack is the key to any great film.

Review of Lost In Translation (DVD)
Advantages: Beautifully shot, brilliant performances from both Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, great direction and script from Sofia Coppola. Disadvantages: None for me personally, but people who don’t like these types of films might find it slow and boring, some people have also complained there’s no story but I personally don’t think that’s a big deal.
Advantages: It fills in a couple of hours Disadvantages: It will be a couple of hours of complete boredom.

Review of Lost In Translation (DVD)
Advantages: Amazing fight scenes and stunts, no wires so everything you see is for real. Disadvantages: The plots aren't amazing but still watchable, not for people who don't like foreign films.
