I bought this rather cheaply at only £7.99, a good price for a new DVD, even second hand ones can cost £10, admittedly it was on sale and had come down in price twice. Makes you think?, if their selling it at such a low price then how good can it be?.
I have actually seen this before when I rented out the video, and it was with some trepidation that I did decide to watch it, the memories of the goofy TV series I used to watch on Sundays lunchtimes in my early teens still linger about my mind, however I’m a person who’ll give almost everything a chance.

So the plot Earth in the future and the human race is at war with a terrorist group, also the earth is dying or rather, it will be unable to support human life in approximately twenty years time, due to polution and such. They have found a planet called Alpha Prime, that can support life and want to colonise it but..........so do the terrorists.
A hyperspace gate is being built by earth and a mission is being sent to Alpha Prime (which will take ten years) to build a hyperspace gate there, using their hyperdrive to pass through the gates will enable quick and direct access to Alpha Prime, activating the hyperdrive without passing through the gate means that they could end up anywhere in space.
Enter Dr Smith in league with the terrorists who sabotages the ship’s robot, and who is also double crossed and knocked unconscious while on the ship, the Jupiter 2, the ship takes off and the robot goes mad, Dr Smith wakes up the crew, they stop the robot and find they are heading into the sun, only one way out, activate the hyperdrive and end up Lost In Space. And all this in the first half hour!.
Now the premise is set up you can get on with the story, and its a fairly typical sci/fi adventure, we’ve seen it all before, in films such as Alien, and in episodes of Star Treck, Red Dwarf, and so on. A small bunch of humans in deep space encounter an unknown/alien structure, investigate, and run into some kind of alien monster, and, with a couple of twists on the way, end up happy ever after. Also you have (unsurprisingly) a love interest, a young brother and sister arguing - type of thing and a message that dads love their sons, ahhhh.
So What's it Like? As it goes, its not bad, plenty of action, tension, great effects and some very impressive, real looking shots of the ship taking off and landing. Matt LeBlanc plays a character not to dissimilar from Joey from friends (which he also plays, in case you didn't know), only a little more intelligent. Gary Oldman, didn’t quite fit the role for me, and the young girls voice sounded rather strange aswell.
One thing about films like this and The Matrix, Spawn etc., is that if I like them I’m always waiting for a sequel because these films set the premise of the story and the sequel can actually get on and do something, ie, you don’t have to watch the bit where he’s just an ordinary bloke who’s..........., or its just an ordinary........, which is what happens in the first 30 minutes of this film, after this you get straight into the action, and the telling of the story. Not that this is a compliant, I do love these films.
The DVD The extra’s on the region 2 DVD (for which I now own) are;
Crew info, Music video, Deleted scenes, US & international trailer, Special effects, Production stills.
So not bad extras, deleted scenes are always nice to see, the trailers are neither here nor there to me, only if there stuff in them that isn’t in the film, also are interactive menus. It seems that buying a DVD is only worthwhile if there’s a lot of extra’s on it, but then again I was quite happy buying videos with just the film on it alone, so am I happy buying DVD with no extra’s?, no, odd that.
And So If you like sci/fi then its quite enjoyable, nothing new, plotwise, but as a peice of escapism, yeah it works, the whole dads and sons thing I could have well done without (why they have to put these moral messages in I don't know). Some of the dialogue/acting at times seems that their saying the lines rather than acting them, but it doesn't harm the film in anyway.
Pretty run-of-the-mill, but I’d recommend it, and would watch a sequel.
Lost In Space was one of those films that I really wanted to enjoy. I like science fiction films in a big way, and given the fact that this was supposed to be a major cinema blockbuster I had (relatively) high hopes that this would be a good movie. Initially, I was quite pleasantly surprised, but as the film wore on, that nagging doubt in the back of my mind manifested itself into full-blown disappointment. Although this was based on a cult television ... ...sixty years in the future, Lost In Space presents us with a planet Earth on the verge of extinction. Fossil fuels are nearly exhausted, and scientists have calculated that the planet will be unable to support human life within twenty years. ...shall we 'update' today? Hey, Lost In Space. Wasn't that the one with a talking dog or something? No that must have been been another load of old tosh. Still, never mind we can give this dusty old show a makeover, update the effects, and make a truck load of cash peddling cheap spin offs and nasty merchandising just like we did with every film since Star Wars. I'm waaaaaay too young to remember the original series (well as it was shown about 15 years before I popped out of my mummy then it's understandable) but I do remember the repeats that Channel 4 showed on a Sunday lunchtime somewhen in the 80's, so I am all too aware of the original show. Brace yourselves, were about to enter comparisson city.

Advantages: Effects were quite good. Disadvantages: Yep.
This is the big-screen, big-budget version of the Irwin Allen TV classic of the sixties now afforded cult status, which was shown on TV very recently. A bit of what goes around, comes around.
Directed by Stephen Hopkins this film never reached the heights that it could have done because it seemed to me that the director was absent most of the time. The editing left quite a bit to be desired but that may well have been for TV viewing purposes in ... ...Many of the special effects were special and effective, particularly the opening scene in space where good guys and bad guys battle it out to prevent the space station from being destroyed. This sequence, however, was only to introduce to the viewer to Don West played by Matt LeBlanc as a super hero and to establish that there were forces on Earth not keen on the idea of a hypergate to the stars.
Set in 2058 (not long now) the earth is almost out ...

...up into space and got lost (funny that, the title kind of gives it away!). So, when they made the decision to remake the series into a film, giving it a futuristic overhaul, I was really excited. The film was released in 1998, and its running time is 130 minutes.
The Plot
In the year 2058, scientists have realised that in order for the population of Earth to survive, they must relocate to somewhere outside the planet, for it is dying. The Robinson ... ...yet they find themselves literally lost in space when the sinister Smith stows away. Dr John Robinson and family then find themselves searching for a way back home and fighting for their own survival, let alone that of the Earth. Armed with the latest state of the art gadgetry and a hot shot military man, Major Don West, the Robinsons see adventure after adventure as they try to find their way back.

A Sci-Fi spectacular with a budget the size of a small country. Non-stop special effects, big name stars and a good transfer to DVD with great Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and a digitally produced widescreen presentation. If only it had a story and a script that didn’t make you weep.
The DVD has a reasonable selection of extras including deleted scenes, crew info, trailers, a documentary on the special effects, music videos and so on. That is ... ...watching the film, you will be looking for a reason to justify ever getting it out of it’s box again.
The original story line must have been made up like a shopping list. LeBlanc is the hero with a chip on his shoulder and the one-liners, Graham is the foxy love interest, Oldman is a baddy and you can have a couple of bickering kids to play up the laughs. Throw them all into a space ship, convince the audience they might all die (Who cares!) and ...

Advantages: Great piece of classic TV history Disadvantages: Perhaps a little more dated than some?
The good news is that I have, on my desk, all of the entire LostInSpace the complete series on DVD. The bad news is that, as they are only journalist's review copies, I have to send them all back. Within one week?
Still, the last time I saw the first episode was when I was knee high to a grasshoppers so it was interesting to see how the series first began, all those years ago. The first episodes were in black and white which lasted for some time until Irwin Allen the producer was able to convince the studio to go to the extra expense of colour. And it has to be said that this idea did work very well, as it mean that the production department was able to go all out with colourful costumes and backdrops, etc.
The concept of the series was an interesting one. In 1997 (well, that was 30 years into the future!) overpopulation was such ...
Advantages: Must have for all fans Disadvantages: Even more weird than I remembered
LostinSpace Series Three. Gosh. How time flies. Was it really all those years ago when in 1997(!) the Robinson family, captain Don West and their robot were put off course by the meddling booby Dr Smith, a treacherous spy paid to sabotage the ship.
The cast list was as follows: Prof. John Robinson (Guy Williams) Maureen Robinson (June Lockhart) Captain Don West (Mark Goddard) Judy Robinson (Marta Kristen) Will Robinson (Billy Mumy) Penny Robinson (Angela Cartwright) Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) Robot (Bob May) and the voice of the robot was provided by Dick Tufeld.
By Series 3 Jonathon Harris had completely remade Dr Zachary Smith form a lacklustre and transparent villain into one of the most towering giants of world TV, the Machiavellian, scheming, cowardly and lazy Dr Zachary Smith we all came to love and loathe ...
Advantages: Sci Fi for all the family! Disadvantages: phoney monsters, restrictive sets, mediocre acting
LostInSpace was and still is one of my favourite television series of the sixties. I remember coming home from school trying to watch these at tea time on a channel that was never very clear. Having now this DVD collection of the entire first series and with such excellent quality video to disc transfer is a real treat.
Created by Irwin Allen, who's series included 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea', 'The Time Tunnel' and 'Land of the Giants' LostInSpace was very similar in some ways to 'Roddenberrys' 'Star Trek' which incidentally was rejected at the time by CBS in favour of the aforesaid series.
Filmed in black & white the first season was much more serious in tone than the latter ones, which tended to be more camp because of the competition of Batman which was being aired around the same time. The series revolved around ...
