Pie's Jason Biggs will win your heart as lovable loser Paul Tannek a small-town guy just starting college in New York City. Advantages: Jason Biggs, Written and directed by Amy Heckerling of Clueless Fame. Disadvantages: Do guys like Paul actually exist in real life?
...instead of labelling you a loser / geek / dork.. etc?
It's nice to see that Paul doesn't attempt to change when his roommates think he's not cool enough for them, and it's nice to see a film tackle issues like this in a funny way that you don't really think about until after the film's over.
It also deals with unrequited love - Paul loves Dora, but she loves Professor Alcott who obviously doesn't love her back.
You can't help ... ...to strangle, and some laughs. Loser has all those things, and needless to say, I’ve just ordered the DVD from Amazon!
My one complaint – what the heck was going on with Jason Biggs’ appalling wig?
This film is classed as a romantic comedy, but I'd be tempted to class it as fantasy... Why? Because genuinely nice guys like Paul don't exist, do they?!

While most people have far more interesting things to do with their Saturday nights, I'm usually to be found curled up in front of the TV, and this weekend was no exception, by 11pm last night, there I was, staring at Channel 5 and eagerly awaiting the appearance of Jason Biggs' rather gorgeous face and rather awful wig, in this film - Loser.
[[ Technical Bits ]] Year: 2000. Running Time: 98 Minutes. Cert: 12. Director / Writer: Amy Heckerling, who has previously written and directed Clueless, and Look Who's Talking 1 & 2.
[[ Cast ]] Paul Tannek - Jason Biggs (Evil Woman, American Pie) Dora Diamond - Mena Suvari (American Beauty, American Pie) Adam - Zak Orth (Romeo and Juliet, In & Out) Chris - Thomas Sadoski (Happy Hour) Noah - Jimmi Simpson (Stephen King's Rose Red) Professor Alcott - Greg Kinnear (Stuck On You, You've Got Mail)
[[ Plot ]] Paul Tannek is really too nice for his own good. He comes from a small town, doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs and trusts people way too easily. When Paul gets accepted to a top New York college on a scholarship, he can't believe his luck and looks forward to meeting new friends. He expects his three roommates to be just like him, but he's in for a shock. The three guys he shares a room with are in college to pull girls, have fun and basically do anything but study. While they play around, Paul works hard to keep his grades up and wears a daft-looking hat "because 90% of your body heat escapes through the top of your head", because of this Paul gets labelled a 'Loser'. Eventually Paul gets kicked out of the dormitory and gets a small room in an animal sanctuary, which he shares with a bunch of cats. Meanwhile, he's also met Dora, a girl who's just lost her job, has no money to pay her tuition fees, nowhere to live, and is having an affair with their English Lit teacher. When Dora is given a drugs overdose at a party, Paul takes care of her afterwards and helps her get back on her feet. Having nowhere else to go, she stays with him at the animal sanctuary, and they bond while saving the life of a kitten. Paul realises he is in love with Dora but she is still in love with her professor. Or is she?
[[ My Opinion ]] I expected great things for one reason only - this was written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the woman who also wrote and directed Clueless (One of my favourite films of all time) and I wasn't disappointed. This provides a good mix of comedy and drama, but it also gives you something to think about. The film is very much about 'fitting in with the crowd', and what happens when you don't do that. Is it wrong to be different and why can't people just accept you for who you are instead of labelling you a loser / geek / dork.. You can't help feeling sorry for the main characters, but even so, half the time you want to grab hold of Paul and yell "stop being so nice!" As for the supporting characters, they’re the type that you love to hate. At the end of the film, the screen tells you what each character went on to do with their lives and the texts for Paul’s three roommates are pretty funny!
The soundtrack is a big pro for this film as well, and I found I knew almost every song on there. The most recognized being Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag, which was a big hit when the film was first released in 2000, and featured Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari starring in the video. The soundtrack also features Blue by Eiffel 65 (Remember that ‘blue, da ba de da ba di song?) The Bad Touch by The Bloodhound Gang (‘You and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals…’) Pretty Fly For A White Guy by The Offspring, Stop The Rock by Apollo Four Forty, and She’s So High by Tal Bachman. Yes, it’s very teenage angst rock, or “self-loathing complaint rock you can dance to!”
This film has had some pretty bad reviews, but I really enjoyed it. It’s hardly groundbreaking cinema or wildly original, but admittedly, I don’t ask a lot from my movies. I just like a nice storyline, no matter how many times it’s been done before, a cute guy doesn’t go amiss, characters you don’t want to strangle, and some laughs. Loser has all those things, and needless to say, I’ve just ordered the DVD from Amazon! My one complaint – what the heck was going on with Jason Biggs’ appalling wig?

[[ Interesting Facts ]] - Note the reference to Clueless, which was set in Bronson Alcott high school, while Dora's boyfriend in this is called Professor Alcott. - Watch out for cameo’s by Dan Aykroyd, Legally Blonde’s Meredith Scott Lynn (Enid Wexler), and Amy Heckerling’s daughter Mollie Israel, who plays Chris’s girlfriend Annie.
A quiet suburb in a swanky English town. We head up the driveway of the unusually titled home, noticing a bloody hand behind one of the bushes. We quickly walk past, and enter through the front door. We pass a large Hispanic man with a vest top on, who is trying to stop a tiny dog from humping a chair leg. Walking upstairs, we enter the boudoir of an ageing dignitary, a 55 year old Lady who will be providing us with today’s review. Sssh… ... ...heard of me, to be honest I don’t really give a gnat’s chuff, but Lady Frisson Chafedthigh is here, having been forced to spend the afternoon in the company of a large tub of margarine and my Chinese love eggs. Well, I was all out of the necessary lubrication, and I felt I was getting vibration white finger, so I decided to call down for Alfredo, he and his brother like to work Sundays. Don’t ask me why, something religious I think. ...

Advantages: Midly entertaining, requires little concentration Disadvantages: Not funny, somewhat insulting, stereotypical, bland and boring
The Plot:
Loser, as the title may suggest, is a film about Paul (American Pie's Jason Biggs), who is struggling in New York, and is proclaimed a "loser" by those who know him. This is because he has no fashion sense, (especially when it comes to his hat!) is very clumsy (managing to fall down stairs and constantly knock things over,) he works too hard, trying to keep his grades up because he's on a scholarship, and because he tries to hard to be ... ...very shallow view of what teenagers are like, as Paul is essentially a good guy - he wants to do well at college, he wants to be friends with everyone, and help everyone, he doesn't want to drink or do drugs, and for being such a sweet guy, he gets labeled, a Loser.
He has the misfortune to be sharing his student accommodation with three guys who are the true loser's of this film, they are from rich families, are used to getting drunk and partying ...

Advantages: It's so sweet and funny Disadvantages: It's so sad, because he's picked on
I had wanted to see this movie for ages after seeing Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari in American Pie 1 and 2. I loved the song "Teenage Dirt bag" too. (the song for the movie) So when it was on Sky's movie channels last night I decided to watch it!
*THE STORY*

Paul goes off to college and after not fitting in with his roommates he is called a loser. When the other roommates decide they want him out they tell a teacher that Paul is "racist, messy and irresponsible" when Paul realizes what they're doing he says it's all true and gets moved out, to a vets. He shares a back room with a lot of animals, who he cares for full time.
In Paul's first class he falls down ...

Advantages: Good Acting, Amusing Disadvantages: Stale Script
Loser is not what I expected. It’s not American Pie, it’s too sweet for all that, it’s the Scream of the teen comedy, it could be included in so many genres, a romantic comedy, gross out teen flick, coming of age tale and zero to hero story. No it’s not what I expected; I instantly thought that it would be American Pie 4. But it is probably better than that, but maybe a little less entertaining, I enjoyed it greatly, but couldn’t get rid of the thought ... ...which they see themselves, but Loser isn’t really accessible, the only character that I think people could relate to is Dora, as she is confused broke and also very charming. The lines are pretty cheesy and the plot is just really daft, although it does serve its purpose in being slightly distracting and mildly amusing. It is fairly intresting, but more of a drama than a comedy.
Overall: A mildly entertaining but slightly confused teen flick. With ...

...and I chose to watch Loser on Pay Per View. I had been avoiding this movie as it stars Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari both from American Pie and to be honest this movie seemed to be a cheap rip off of the aforementioned film.
How wrong could I be, I loved this movie. Jason Biggs plays Paul, the hapless loser mentioned in the title and yes, he is basically the same character as in the two American Pie movies but there is something more lovable about ... ...10 Things I Hate About You, although my girlfriend assures me Heath Ledger is far better looking than Jason Biggs. Loser is full of cliches, but Loser is definately a winner in my book and proof positive that, in cinema at least, nice guys don't always finish last. ...

Advantages: A great idea perfectly filmed Disadvantages: A little dated for some people
who No. 1 is?), each episode has a new No2 each trying in their own way to find out more about No 6. The security system in the village are top notch and the rovers are the vanguard of this (you must have seen the big white bubbles at some point!)
Being the only main regular in the series, Patrick McGoohan plays a strong lead playing the secret agent role very well indeed, and brings an excellent British dry humour to play.
In a situation where he cant trust anyone No 6 must endeavour to escape and/or try and find out as much as he can about the Village.
The series is very surreal at times especially there form of martial arts called Kosho, which is based on 2 trampolines and the loser gets dunked in a pool of water between them. But is worth every penny if you?re looking for a good viewing

After having purchased this for around £2 nearly a year ago I finally managed to watch it, now I know your asking “Why'd he take a year to watch it?” Well I ended up with a Region 1 version of the DVD and having not had a multi-region DVD player it's taken until I finally bought myself a laptop before I've had the chance to see it.
Having been a wrestling fan since the mid 90's (when the “Monday Night Wars” started incidentally) this had caught my eye when it first came out, it was, for those that don't know their professional wrestling probably the best time to be a wrestling fan. With two rival companies trying to out do each other with the ratings and public perception, with each company taking dirty tactics against the other, both knowing that one was going to defeat the other some how. The loser would end ...
Advantages: Funny, touching, dramatic, quirky - just plain brilliant Disadvantages: Quite a bit of swearing and violence; you might not "get it"
everyone should now by now, is great in everything he does, mostly because he plays the same sort of character in every film, so he has it down to a tee. Nobody plays bumbling losers better than Macy. It?s similar with Steve Buscemi. According to the trivia track on the DVD, the Coens wrote the part with Buscemi in mind, and that?s clear to see - fast-talking, hilarious and ?funny looking?. Peter Stormare, as Buscemi?s silent foil, is suitably menacing.
Best of all though is Frances McDormand, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her warm performance. She?s a joy to watch - playing a completely normal, everyday character to whom we can all relate, and she provides the heart of what would otherwise be quite a cold, detached film. I would also imagine she captures the typical mid-west American accent very well indeed, but I wouldn?t really ...

"...Ms. Heckerling [balances the film's] dark satirical tone with a lively lightheartedness....A brave and sincere effort..." (New York Times, p.E8, 21/07/2000)
DVD Description
Amy Heckerling (CLUELESS, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH) directs this romantic comedy starring Jason Biggs as Paul Tannek, a nerdy college freshman with a heart of gold, and Mena Suvari as Dora Diamond, the girl of his dreams. Small-town boy Paul goes to the big city to attend college with high hopes of fitting in and making friends. But from the start, he's fighting an uphill battle. His dorky hat and earnest mannerisms drive his cosmopolitan, ultra-hip roommates crazy, and he finds himself labeled a loser, kicked out of their dorm suite, and living in a room in a veterinary hospital. Meanwhile, Paul falls for Dora, a quirky free spirit who is having a clandestine affair with their professor, Edward Alcott (Greg Kinnear). Despite his feelings for her, Paul does his best to protect Dora from the fact that Alcott doesn't care about her nearly as much as she thinks he does. LOSER also includes brief cameo appearances by Dan Akroyd, David Spade, Andy Dick, Steven Wright, Andrea Martin, Colleen Camp, and Taylor Negron.
