The quality of this film will undoubtedly stand the test of time, as animation tends to age better than 'proper' films, and still compares favourably with the new version.
Unlike the new version, it does stick fairly regimentedly to the book, so if you own the new version, you will notice some subtle differences between the two. Particularly as this version goes about half way through the Two Towers (being the second book of the LOTR) and doesn't leave you expecting more as does the latest version!
The film blends in animation and real life sequences - which comes off most of the time. The character's voices are from a number of well known actors (e.g. John Hurt - Aragorn) which really do add to the film. Again, these voices do not seem out of place and do add a lot of character to the animation.
Additional features are small, unless you are hard of hearing or from another country. There are subtitles for 10 different languages and dolby sound for the English version.
There is no behind the scenes documentary showing you how they managed to blend in the real actors and animation or a bit more information on the story line! But then again, this was made a long time ago so it is understandable that they may not have thought this out ahead!!!!
It is a film of a classic story, and the animation will never age. Ahead of it's time for when it was made, but enjoyable nevertheless - however, the film goes so far and then stops! and you can't help wish that they either carried on or made the second one to finish it off - but for some reason they just stopped.
Well worth a look and suitable for being entertaining for all age groups, but particularly aimed at the younger viewers.

Everyone should know the story by now, but just in case you don't ......

Advantages: Entertaining Disadvantages: Seen the plot before
I watched the first of the trilogy this week on DVD.
I havn't read the book so I didn't and don't know what to expect next.
The film was certainly entertaining but the plot I've seen before in many guises starting long ago in greek mythology with such films as Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses etc. More recently it reminded me of Star Wars particularly as Stephen Lee was a baddy in both who had been turned from good to the dark side in both films. ... ...I'm not so I won't.
The early part of the film is a little slow going as most are but the second half is non stop action and the journey through the caves reminded me of many a computer labyrinth game and possibly the best part of this first part.
I wasn't overimpressed with the lead actor but I thought the rest of the actors where very good.
On the whole I'd give it 8 out of 10 for entertainment value, possibly just a little too long.
I certainly ...

Advantages: Nice one for after the pub Disadvantages: No hoper against the current version
I first saw this film in 1978 when I was extremely young!! (not). At the time I thought it was brilliant but having just seen Peter Jacksons vision of Middle Earth, this version shows its age!
I wish that he had made the second part of the film, as it should be made clear to people that this film only covers half of the complete story, which is not evident from the packaging. Having said that this version is entertaining in its own right, and is ...

Advantages: Good cinematic effects, graphics and landscape Disadvantages: A little too long
A visual threat of roiling flames, cool clashes of metal and a clear distinct fight between good and evil, Lord of the Rings had outdone many other shows, bagging acclaimed awards and leaving people hungry for more. It is able to blend a kind of fantasy- like orcs and goblins, mages and wizards with a very rustic and ancient setting of Middle East, The Shire, Mordor, and other architectural sets. It leaves us gasping and transfixed in our seats, for every battle, every story stimulates the senses, coupled with good humour and wisdom. This movie shows the rise and ebb of civilizations, great kings and ultimately, the fight between Good and Evil. Wow! A great buy with all three sequels bunched in! A must watch indeed! ...
Advantages: The most complete version of the story, J.R.R. Tolkein would be very proud. Disadvantages: None. It is a masterpiece, a true epic.
This Trilogy box set is a must for any avid lover of the story of 'Lord of the Rings'. Not only does it include the complete 'Director's Cut' of all three films, but contains a massive amount of behind the scenes extras on the making of the whole complete film.
The extended versions give the story a more fluid and comprehensive representation of the original story as written by Tolkein, compared to the original theatrical releases. This is particularly noticeable from the second film onwards as I find the cinema release of 'the Two Towers' a little lacking in detail. This version is extremely long, however, being more than 11 hours in length in total which might put off some potential buyers.
The special effects are mindblowing and the music is breathtaking. There are memorable performances by all the actors, especially by ...
Advantages: best dvd collection you can own, Disadvantages: need plenty of time to see the film
Pretty sure that this film "LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY " have been reviewed many times. But I would still like to share my experience with this brilliant film by Peter Jackson. Everything about this film is perfect! I would suggest you to sit tight and don't let anyone disturb you while watching it, you will definitely miss something important if you did. Actually it happened to me so i just warn you! Don't make the same mistake as i did. Luckily i have the DVD set and i can watch it anytime i want to. Anyways here are some briefing on what to expect.

DVD Description
Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered Middle-earth saga captures the dark mood of the books extraordinarily well. The film covers the first half of the trilogy--THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and the earlier part of THE TWO TOWERS--as Frodo (voiced by Christopher Guard), the cousin of Bilbo Baggins from THE HOBBIT, is given the all-powerful ring sought by the evil Sauron of Mordor. So begins his adventure, as he must elude Mordor's black riders in an effort to prevent the ring from returning to its owner and thereby signaling the end of Middle-earth. Even with the mighty wizard Gandalf as his ally and faithful friends Merry, Sam, and Pippin by his side, Frodo is still up to his hobbit neck in peril. Bakshi took a big risk when deciding to direct the beloved Tolkien tale, but the resulting work effectively brings Middle-earth to the screen. Bakshi combines painted live-action footage with various styles of animation to create a very unusual collage-style texture for this film. Viewers should be warned that the story ends rather abruptly, leaving room for a sequel that was, unfortunately, never filmed. Still, for fans of fantasy, this moody, atmospheric version of the novels captures the shadowy hues of Tolkien's work in a way that is unique and worth discovering.
