With Lolita, Adrian Lyne has done something a bit unusual. He has taken a staggeringly good novel and created from it a film which doesn't let you down.
The story is one of a young boy in France who falls in love with a girl who abruptly dies. The pain of the loss haunts him through his life and he eventually finds himself living with a woman and her daughter. He focuses his haunted heart on the 12 year old Dolores. From here a story of love, crime, fear and redemption unfolds and we as an audience are taken along a route which may seem morally dubious but is beautifully bittersweet, touching and tragic.
There are many things to say about this film. Firstly, the performance of the actors is brilliant. Jeremy Irons is absoultely wonderful and really carries the character. He IS Humbert. Dominique Swain is also great and doesn't miss a trick. I really enjoyed the inclusion of Frank Langella as Quilty as he gives a great performance and really shows the character as i saw him when reading the book.
Moving on, the camerwork is fantastic. The film never really has any great pace but it never becomes too slow. Some shots in the film are so beautiful (especially with the wonderful music from Ennio Morricone) that they almost sing with the tenderness with which they were made. The music is typical Morricone, very simple but hugely beautiful, and creates great atmosphere.
As for the extras, we aren't looking at anything amazing quantity wise. There is Dominique Swain's screen-test, a 10-minute behind the scenes featurette, some deleted scenes and a commentary from Adrian Lyne. All of these extras are great if you love this film but you may be dissapointed if you like to spend a lot of time looking at them as there is little to see here. However, with such a great film to bolster the package you can't really find too much wrong here. I would suggest that you read the novel first however as not only is it a magnificent read but it really adds to the experience of the film.
