'Lolita' deals with a contravercial subject matter, but the resulting film is both sensitive and beautifully subtle. Jeremy Irons plays an excellent role as Humbert Humbert, the enchanted step-father, and Domanique Swain gives an amazing performance as the seductive, yet innocent Lolita. The story could be summed up as 'stolen innocence'-a young girl becomes facinated with her new step-father, the very man who married her mother just to be close to the virginal 'nymphet'. The film, like the book before it, deals with the subject of this 'paedophilia' without tackyness, and focuses on Humbert's overwhelming appreciation and worship of Lolita-her delicate beauty and childish energy, and reflects magnificently the unbelievable power she holds over him. Lolita is a powerful film, shot beautifully from the point of view of Humbert Humbert. The actors have been well cast, and portray their characters admirably. This film is definitely worth a watch, although some may not like the idea of the issues it deals with.
