If you never caught this series when it was on telly during the 90s, then I can highly recommend a watch to you. The main stars are Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. Hatcher is better known these days for her starring role in Desperate Housewives, but her role as Lois Lane is what put her in the public eye back in the day. Hatcher is excellent as Lois Lane - a real feisty bird! Cain is pretty fabulous as Clark/Superman too - he is just so dashingly handsome!
This box set begins at the very beginning with the pilot episode. So for all those people with little Superman knowledge, it does not matter. The pilot explains most of what you need to know and does so in a very entertaining way.
In the pilot we see Clark Kent move to Metropolis to find work as a journalist. He eventually finds work at the Daily Planet where he meets Lois Lane, of course, and the two develop an interesting partnership. What is particularly good about the opening episode, is that the creators have included a storyline where Clark comes up with the idea of Superman. You watch him experiment with all sorts of weird and wonderful costumes, which is a particularly amusing part of the pilot. Dean Cain has also not made Clark Kent an awkward, clumsy geek like Christopher Reeve did on film. Clark is a cool character and I think this works better really.
The pilot sets up the rest of the series really well. As the series progresses, we find out more and more about Superman's past, as well as develop a familiarisation with the other characters. Each character is well written and certainly 3 dimensional. Perry White, the Planet Editor-in-Chief, is presented as a stalwart Elvis fan and he constantly makes references to the King throughout. One great quote of his is, 'great shades of Elvis!' There's Jimmy Olsen, who goes from being the office odd job boy to quite the photographer. There's also Cat Grant, who is the over-the-top gossip columnist. She's a real man-eater and the complete opposite of Lois. Her outfits alone are something to marvel at! When her and Lois get together the dialogue is brilliant. Lastly, of course, is the 'baddie' Lex Luthor. Clark knows from day 1 that he is a dodgy character and spends most of the 1st series trying to prove this to Lois. Lois, however, remains wholly unconvinced and by the end of the series has even agreed to marry Luthor. Silly, silly woman! Characterisation wise, it's top marks. They all are unique and have real depth to them.
As for the other episodes in the box set, I don't want to go into too much detail, as I don't want to spoil them for you! I will tell you though that storylines include a hunt for an invisible man, a exposé of cyborg boxers, Lois & Clark undercover as a nightclub singer and bartender, a vengeful woman with a 'love potion' perfume that sends everyone head over heels in love (even Lois!) and an outbreak of over smart children who try and take over Metropolis! These are just a few of the episodes you can enjoy and each one is so well written that I defy anyone not to enjoy watching them! Of course there is an element of 'far-fetchedness' about them but hey, this is a programme about a muscle bound hero who flies, so go with it!
The box set is well presented with some great pictures of Lois and Clark. The 21 episodes are spread over 6 discs altogether and there are some extra features inlcuded to boot - if you want to spoil the illusion and see how they create the visual effects, then it's all there!
On the whole, I would highly recommend this box set to you. Certificate PG, it's one you can watch with all the family! At RRP it is quite expensive but I managed to get it for a bargain price of £18.97 from Amazon and it is certainly worth every penny of that. So why not treat yourself? You can probably get it second hand off ebay for less than a tenner - you'd be a fool not to frankly!

ABC's fantasy-dramedy captured Lois' side of the classic comic-book tale, thanks the quirky ingenue's scene stealing ability to display steely strength one minute, snappy comic timing the next, and gooey romanticism after that... (Entertainment Weekly, )
DVD Description
Building on the Superman myth, this television series from the 1990s centres on the young adult life of Clark Kent (Dean Cain) in the modern-day city of Metropolis. While struggling to balance his Superman duties with his job working for the Daily Planet, Kent meets and falls in love with fellow reporter Lois Lane. When news breaks of Superman's existence, Lane becomes smitten with the elusive superhero, but fails to recognise that Kent and Superman are one and the same! This short-sightedness leads her to refuse Kent's romantic advances in a cunning twist of irony. Driven by this odd romantic triangle of sorts, the show's first series also focuses on life around the Daily Planet office, and Superman's battles with a whole host of villains, making it part-romance, part-action adventure.
