Stallone), a model prisoner, is dragged from his bed in a minimum security prison and transferred to Gateway, a maximum security hellhole run by Warden Drumgoole (Donald Sutherland). The warden has pulled every string he can to have Leone placed under his control, which is where he aims to keep him for his entire life. Previously, Leone had been one of Drumgoole's charges at another facility until he escaped to be at his father's death bed. Drumgoole's harshness, which forced Leone to break out two weeks away from release, prompted a newspaper report that accused the warden of brutality. Leone was sentenced to additional time, while Drumgoole was publicly humiliated and transfered to Gateway, the worst facility in the prison system. Now it's time for Drumgoole to get even. His plan is to physically and psychologically intimidate Leone until he lashes out. When he does, Drumgoole will extend his prison sentence in hell... or kill him.

...But Certainly Up There With The Best Of The Rest comes Lock Up - a tough prison drama starring Sylvester Stallone and Donald Sutherland. Stallone plays Frank Leone, a model prisoner with only 6 months left to serve of his sentence. Suddenly and seemingly for no apparent reason he finds himself transfered to a maximum security prison to serve out the rest of his sentence. All becomes clear when he is introduced to the new warden of the prison who instigated the transfer - the sadistic warden Drumgoole(Sutherland) from whose custody he had previously escape some years earlier. The problems for Leone start immediately when it becomes clear that the reason for his transfer is solely so that Drumgoole can push him over the edge and break his chances of parole. His arrival precipitates a systematic series of beatings and mind games as it seems that Drumgoole will stop at nothing to break Leone...the final straw coming when a psychopath due for release tells him that Drumgoole has paid him to rape and murder Leone’s grilfriend when he is released...
Stallone is much maligned by the critics and the sheep-like public alike, but careful analysis of the guy shows him to be a shrewd operator who knows his limitations and plays on them to maximum effect. Lock Up is another of his movies which was probably written with him in mind as the lead character and therefore he suits the part perfectly. He isn’t asked to do much other than flex his muscles and look macho, pained, angry and frustrated - and he can play those parts to perfection. Lock Up isn’t a prison drama of the calibre of something like The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption or Papillon for example, but it is certainly one of the best of the rest.
The acting is...ok I guess. Other than Stallone, you have Sutherland playing completely against type to great effect as the sadistic warden complete with savage crew cut hairstyle and a manic glint in his eye...but the rest are pretty much non-descript and instantly forgettable. This is an action movie, and has just the kind of energy you would expect and require from a movie of this type. There is plenty of stereotyping, macho posturing and general prison archetypes on display here and the kind of fights, face-offs and ugly look competitions you expect to see and done in great style so you will not be disappointed. Yes, its very dumb and mostly predictable in this sense, but there is also a rather good story at play here as well. It is certainly one of Stallone's best movies, ranking just below The Rock in my opinion and well worth checking out if you like this kind of thing.
Overall, once again it has to be said that rather than try to fight again his critics, which I personally do not doubt he is capable of, Stallone gives them exactly what they are expecting - and once again does it in great style. I am not a huge fan of his movies, but when he gets them right, they are always excellent examples of the genre and well worth a couple of hours of your time. With Lock Up, he gets it very right and its a great movie. Take a look next time you come across a copy, its a great no-brainer.
Advantages: One of Stallone's "Better" Performances, The Score, Cast, Brutal Action Disadvantages: Predictable, Unrealistic
...This is the premise of Lock Up: a jailhouse battle of wills movie that attempts to portray the harsh realities of the justice system, with enough blood and machoism to feed your blood thirst.
Lock Up is perhaps a brutal version of Rocky: set in the very real Rahway Prison, East Jersey, Stallone plays the emotional nice guy Frank Leone who only wants to do the time for escaping his previous sentence to see his dying step dad. Unfortunately, the warden ... ...the time of its release, Lock Up was lost somewhere between Rambo III and Rocky V. Even hardcore Stallone fans rarely give the movie the light of day these days, even though it ranks considerably higher than turkeys such as Judge Dredd, or D-Tox.
Lock Up is hardly impressive, but is perhaps Stallone's most liberal movie, and a test of his character's spirit. Of course, with it being Sly, the audience is always aware that he will prevail, but a sadistic ...

Advantages: Plenty of Action, Sylvester Stallone at his best and Good Soundtrack Disadvantages: Some viewers may dislike the violence
In this film we see Sylvester Stallone locked up in a minimum security prison and then transferred to a maxmimum security prison not long from his release. He then meets Donald Sutherland who acts as the cruel prison warden who has past with Stallone, this then causes conflict and the story evolves. This film is one i would most definately recommend fans of Stallone to watch, as he plays his character superbly. My favourite scene in the film is in ...

Advantages: Good film. Good sing-a-long songs Disadvantages: Could be a bit long for some people. Not many extras on the DVD
the factory is really good. ?The Old Bamboo? is another really good song at the fun fair. In the fun fair scene, look out for Barbara Windsor and Arthur Mullard briefly!
On the beach, ?Truly Scrumptious? is another great sing-a-long which you?ll be humming to for the rest of the day, I?m sure! And, how can I write a review about this film and not mention the song ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?? Certainly the best song in the film. I?m sure you all know the words to this song! And ?Roses of Success? sung by Grandpa Potts & Co in the lockedup room.

, is never gratuitous or unnecesarily harsh. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is probably the best British film I've ever seen, and is up there with the best from Hollywood. The DVD also contains an excellent booklet describing everything you need to know about the film, although a few extra features on disk would have been nice - there are no interviews of anything, just a few outtakes bundled in with the credits. ...

1997's Lock and Load is the DVD release of an HBO showcase TV special featuring Denis Leary's stand up comedy. As Leary is very much an 'adult' comic, the DVD carries a 15 certificate due to the strength of language and sexual references. If this type of thing offends you, please don't read on, I'll put some quotes at the end, and even though I'll disguise the fruitier words with ***, I'm sure you'll still guess.
For a more detailed background on Denis Leary see the review for 'No Cure for Cancer,' but he is an Irish-American comic and actor with a confrontational, aggressive style, and is recognisable from extensive film and television drama work, most recently the hit series 'Rescue Me'.
