A brutally comic tale about a group of London friends who find themselves deep in debt to an East End tough, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS is quick-paced, stylized, and...
more...highly entertaining. In his debut feature film, director-writer Guy Ritchie weaves a tangled web of shady, blithely eccentric characters and several storylines, all of them coming together in a gleeful explosion of murder and mayhem. When streetwise charmer Eddy (Nick Moran), the son of steely bar owner JD (Sting), botches a gambling scheme with his dad's nemesis, porn king Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty), he's got one week to come up with 500,000 pounds or he loses his fingers--and so do his friends Tom (Jason Flemyng), Bacon (Jason Statham), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher). While the pals scheme to make the money, Harry indulges his penchant for valuable antique shot guns, stolen for him by a couple of inept burglars. Soon the missing guns, a paranoid group of marajuana growers, a mean-spirited debt collector (Vinnie Jones) and his young son, and a violent bunch of thugs, are all thrown together in this tightly-woven, genuinely funny story that takes its inspiration from old British comic gangster flicks like THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN and more recent films like RESERVOIR DOGS and THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

Some movies are just pure entertainment….

There are some movies made, which have nothing but pure entertainment and some passing some hidden message. Movies, like Traffic, Pulp Fiction, snatch and now Lock Stock & two smoking Barrels are different breed of movie, all about guns, money and gangsters. Mostly, these kinds of movie are only for adult viewing, because there is lot of blood shed and use of abusive language.

Lock Stock & Two smoking Barrels resemble the typical Quentin Tarantino's breed of movies, which are very crisp; yeah definitely the pace of the movie will include lot of surprising characters springing up in the middle of the movie and violence.

Behind the scene….

Movie, directed by music video director, Guy Ritchie, is made on a very low budget, released in UK with tremendous success. This movie, with the typical British accent (I just love this accent) is really fun to watch. Though initially it will look like documentary but the background score of the movie with good use of rock will really involve you in the movie. The movie doesn’t have lot of known faces but you would won’t be interested if they are the stars are not, because the character played by each individual is excellent and every character having his own turns of humor and excitement.

Story so far…

The story starts with narration about 4 small time thieves who have an ambition of growing big. Eddy (Nick Moran), Soap (Dexter Fletcher), Tom (Jason Fleming) and Bacon (Jason Statham), who have enough money that they take challenge with the Local Don 'Hatchet' Harry Lonsdale (P.H. Moriarty) to game of Poker. Eddy is a master card player, who has never lost to anyone, but, Harry had some other plans for Eddy. He had kept hidden video camera, to spy on Eddy by his right hand man Barry the Baptist (Lenny Mc lean).

As expected, Eddy losses the game, but he wont leave that place like that hence he has to pay Half a million pounds to Harry, that too in a weeks time. Now, this money has to be paid by every one of his friends, Soap, Tom & Bacon. If the amount is not paid, then Harry’s man, Big Chris (Vinne Jones) will start cutting of finger for every day late.

This Herculean task of getting such a big amount in short time was not easy for this foursome; hence they come up with a scheme to steal the money from Eddy’s neighbor (Frank Harper), who has plans to rip off a group of drugs maker, who have been employed by local drug Lord (Vas Blackwood). Simultaneously, Harry had given 2 local robbers to steal 2 antique Shot guns which is priced more than 2.5 million pound. Then starts the comedy of errors with one stealing from the other, and everyone going on in a circle. In the movie you can see special appearance by Singer Sting (as Eddy’s Father) who is ready to give out his bar to repay the loan. I don’t want to reveal the end and become a spoil sport.

Overall this movie is a rollercoaster ride with lot of violence comedy, and the extensive use of abusive language. Especially as I said the British accent is too good and the characters playing it perfectly.

Soundtrack…

If you are a fan of rock, and fast moving songs then you would definitely like the soundtrack of this movie. The track used during the movie is jelling with the pace of the movie.

Acting says it all…

Every, actor in this movie has done very good job, probably the best part of the movie is its humor and the way, these actors have presented it. I would also like to give full credit to director Guy Ritchie, in making such a good movie on such a low budget but coming out winner. Like other directors, who focus more on the violence, Ritchie has made an effort to put violence and the humor in a great combination. If you had liked Tarantion’s movie then you should not miss this movie.

Asyis’s Verdict…

If you liked Reservoir Dog, if you liked Pulp Fiction, if you liked Snatch then you would definitely like this movie. Probably one of the top 10 English in my list.
